The school year is beginning and so is a year full of opportunities to lead.

As students across Wyandot County head back to the classroom, we’re getting ready for our newest program—-Emerging Leaders!

This program gives local high school students the opportunity to step outside the classroom, connect with leaders throughout Wyandot County, explore career paths, build confidence, and discover the role they can play in the future of their community.

Because leadership doesn’t start with a job title. Sometimes it starts with a student realizing, “I could do that.”

Here’s to a great school year—and to developing the next generation of Wyandot County leaders. 💙

🌱 Leadership Wyandot — Session 8: Land & Legacy | Agriculture & Our Community 🌾

Last week, Leadership Wyandot explored the people, programs and resources that connect our land, our agricultural roots and the future of our community.

We started with Jeff Homan and Katie from Wyandot Soil & Water Conservation District, learning about everything from ditches and watersheds to preservation, drainage and the many ways they support agriculture and protect our county’s natural resources.

DeAnn Funkhouser of Funkhouser Family Farm shared how their working family farm has grown and evolved through cattle, chickens, rotational pastures and locally sold meat and eggs. The rain kept us from touring the farm, but we also got a preview of another exciting venture — DeAnn and Kelsey Stief of Fort Eighty Eight are preparing to open Outpost 67 in Marseilles!

We also heard from Dawn Kidwell and Andrea with Ohio State Extension Office about the impact 4-H, from Cloverbuds through older youth, and how hands-on experiences help kids develop confidence, responsibility, leadership and discover their own interests.

Then Malainey Boes and Kyla Conley, formerly of Upper Sandusky FFA absolutely knocked it out of the park. They shared how FFA builds leadership, confidence, public speaking and service — and reminded us that FFA is about developing young leaders, not simply future farmers. Both are impressive examples of the fantastic program led by Anna Cresswell. 💙💛

We wrapped up with Eric Romich of The Ohio State University at Marion, who tied agriculture, energy, technology and economic growth together in an incredibly fascinating conversation about what increasing energy demands and new development mean for our farms and communities — and how we continue to grow while preserving the land that makes Wyandot County what it is.

Agriculture is part of our history, our economy and our identity. Understanding how we honor that legacy while preparing for what comes next made Land & Legacy a pretty fantastic Leadership Wyandot day.
