Let’s talk about K9 Nokey and her handler, Carrie. As we’ve gotten to know these two over the last 18 months, it has become increasingly apparent that they are not your average volunteer search team members. Rather, they are both focused and self-motivated–driven, in fact—to master all the skills required of our search teams. Nokey told us early on this work was her jam. As typically happens, her handler was playing catch-up from the start. Carrie’s determination in the face of obstacles, challenges, setbacks, and just plain, consistent hard work has been noteworthy. Over the past couple of months, the pair completed their trail and light brush internal assessments, leaving only a few evaluations left to become operational. In addition, Carrie recently completed both her NASAR SarTech2 as well as Maryland Search Team member cerntifications. It is so rewarding for all of us on SARDOM to witness this team develop into an exceptional live-find search and rescue K9 and handler. Bravo!

November trainings took place at two wilderness locations and two very different "urban" sites. Of course, efforts were made to include map and compass practice where possible. Dogs and handlers met the challenges posed with persistence and skill. Brainwork was achieved in a variety of environments that will only increase confidence in our dogs and their handlers. Thanks to Search and Rescue Assist (SARA--Linthicum) and the crew of the USS John W. Brown (WWII era Liberty ship) for providing unique environments in which to train.

We are so pleased to announce that K9 Nokey and handler Carrie passed their first assessment—open field—with flying colors! The 40+ acre problem presented challenging scent conditions that both dog and handler navigated successfully. Their march toward certification has begun!

Members of SARDOM have been working hard to build and maintain search skills between shutdown anxieties, weddings, and long-distance caretaking responsibilities. We have managed to include trainings in wilderness area search, urban auto salvage yard work, water recovery, as well as map & compass. K9 R***r (ret.) turned 15 years old, celebrating with Paws of Honor, and K9 Nokey and handler Carrie were able to attend Canine Search and Recovery, Inc.’s annual training seminar in Oklahoma. Bravo to all of our volunteers who continue to be committed to the mission of locating the missing.

These last six weeks have been challenging weather-wise. Obviously, we must train in all the conditions in which we may be called to search—even in the persistent, dangerously high heat and humidity we’ve experienced this summer. Keeping handlers and K9’s safe is paramount, sometimes necessitating training location changes (favoring those spots with easy access to water and shade) or last-minute changes to online trainings. Bravo to all of our team members for supporting each other through the weather challenges to help maintain skills and make progress training our partners.
