Statement of Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III:
Senator Mikulski includes $646 million in federal funds for a new, fully consolidated FBI headquarters.
Upper Marlboro, MD – Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III released this statement following news that Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Maryland) has successfully included $646 million in federal funds in the fiscal year (FY) 2017 CJS spending bill for a new, fully consolidated FBI headquarters. These new dollars are in addition to the $390 milllion she procured in the last fiscal year for the project.
“I want to thank Senator Mikulski and Team Maryland for once again getting the job done on Capitol Hill and positioning Prince George’s County and the State of Maryland to be the new home for the Federal Bureau of Investigations by including $646 million dollars in the federal budget for a new fully consolidated, 21st century headquarters.
With a new consolidated headquarters at the Greenbelt Metro Station or at the former Landover Mall site, the FBI will be able to better protect the national security of our nation, provide their employees with a 21st century state of the art campus and facilities, and be the best deal for the U.S. taxpayers. Locally, a new FBI headquarters in Prince George’s County would mean better regional equity of federal offices that will assist with improving regional traffic and Metro usage and revenue.
For more than three years now, Prince George’s County, the State of Maryland and the Maryland Congressional delegation have together aggressively campaigned and championed a move of the FBI Headquarters to one of two sites in Prince George’s County. A decision on the site selection is expected from the General Services Administration by the end of the year.
As we are nearing the goal line on this very exciting process that could rewrite the future of Prince George’s County, I am confident that we have the right team, best players, along with the drive and focus to ensure that the federal government chooses the best location – Prince George’s County, Maryland - as the site of an agency that is paramount to our nation’s future and security.”
