It’s going to be HOT the next few days ā˜€ļø

Make sure you’re staying hydrated and don’t forget about your plants too, especially anything newly planted this spring! New plants are still getting established and can dry out fast during stretches of heat like this.

A few quick tips:
šŸ’§ Water in the morning if you can, before the sun and heat really kick in
šŸ’§ Water deeply at the base of the plant instead of a quick surface spray
šŸ’§ Skip watering in the middle of the day when a lot of it will just evaporate

Even native plants appreciate a little extra help while they’re settling in 🌿

Stay cool this week everyone!

Please join us in welcoming our new Nursery Manager, D’Real Graham (pronounced ā€œDee-Realā€)!

D’Real supports the day-to-day operations of the nursery, including plant production, volunteer engagement, and community outreach. He is especially interested in expanding access to native plants and helping people build meaningful relationships with the landscapes they live in. Through his work, he aims to strengthen connections between people, place, and the ecological systems that sustain them.

Before joining Chesapeake Natives, D’Real worked in agriculture and community-based food systems, where he co-founded a farm focused on production, education, and land stewardship. That experience shaped his understanding of seasonal rhythms, soil health, and the importance of cultivating both crops and community.

D’Real is a Cornell Produce Safety Fellow, a Braiding Seeds Fellow Alum, and a graduate of the Future Harvest Beginner Farmer Training Program. He brings a deep appreciation for land-based work and is excited to continue learning alongside the Chesapeake Natives team and volunteer community. He believes native plants offer a powerful pathway for restoring habitat, supporting biodiversity, and reconnecting people to the natural world. We’re thrilled to have him join our team!

Feel free to reach out, introduce yourself, and help us give D’Real a warm welcome, virtually or at the nursery. [email protected] | 202-441-3465
