We're Open This Weekend!

Chesapeake Natives is open today, Saturday, June 27, from 10:00AM-2:00PM and again Sunday, June 28, from 10:00AM-2:00PM.

After several days of storm-related closures, we're excited to welcome everyone back to the nursery. If you're planning to visit, please dress for the weather. The grounds remain wet, and some areas are still muddy, so sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots are recommended.

Whether you're looking for native plants, exploring the demonstration gardens, or stopping by to learn more about habitat restoration, we look forward to seeing you this weekend.

Nursery Closure Update

The Nursery at Chesapeake Natives will remain closed on Friday, June 26, 2026, until further notice.

During Tuesday's storm, a majestic oak tree fell across the nursery access road, bringing down a utility line. The tree now blocks the roadway between Dower House Pond and the southeastern portion of the Rosaryville State Park perimeter trail, making it inaccessible to vehicles, cyclists, horseback riders, and pedestrians.

Standing beside it this evening was a humbling reminder of its size. I couldn't wrap my arms around its trunk, and when standing, it was likely twice the height of the nearby Mount Airy Mansion.

We are hopeful that PEPCO will be able to remove the tree and restore the utility line soon. Once we know more, we'll share an update about whether the nursery can reopen for retail sales this weekend.

As unfortunate as this situation is, it also reminds us why trees like this matter. Ecologist Doug Tallamy often says, “If you only plant one tree, let it be an oak!" Oaks are considered keystone species because they support more than 550 species of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) in the Mid-Atlantic (more than any other tree genus!) They also provide food and habitat for birds, mammals, insects, and countless other organisms that depend on healthy native ecosystems.

New Staff Alert! Let’s welcome our newly hired Nursery Assistant, Mari, to Chesapeake Natives!

Marielena supports Chesapeake Natives’ day-to-day nursery operations with a focus on watering, plant health, and stewardship. Her work helps ensure that the nursery’s diverse inventory of native plants remains healthy, vibrant, and available to the communities, gardeners, and habitat restoration projects that depend on them. She is especially interested in the relationship between attentive plant care and the responsible use of natural resources, including water.

Before joining Chesapeake Natives, Marielena worked in inside sales, where she developed a reputation for reliability, strong communication, problem-solving, and attention to detail. Through her experience in customer service, sales, operations, and facilities management, she learned the importance of building relationships, supporting teams, and creating positive experiences for the people she serves. As a bilingual English and Spanish speaker, she is excited to help make Chesapeake Natives’ programs, resources, and educational materials more accessible while fostering meaningful connections between people and plants native to the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Marielena holds an Associate’s Degree from Prince George’s Community College and is currently pursuing her Insurance Agent License. She has a deep respect for life in all its forms and is excited to begin her journey caring for, protecting, and growing native plants that support both the environment and local communities. She believes that understanding the connections between plants, wildlife, and people can help communities recognize that meaningful environmental change is both possible and attainable. Through her work at Chesapeake Natives, she hopes to help spread awareness of the organization’s mission and inspire others to build stronger relationships with nature and one another, leaving the world better than they found it.

Do you love plants, being outdoors, and making a difference for local ecosystems?

Chesapeake Natives is seeking a Seasonal Nursery Assistant to join our team at our nursery in Rosaryville State Park. This part-time position (25 hours/week) will help care for nearly 200 species of local ecotype native plants that support pollinators and wildlife throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Position Highlights:
🌿 $20/hour
🌿 25 hours per week (at least one weekend day required)
🌿 Start ASAP through September
🌿 Hands-on experience with native plants
🌿 Work in a beautiful historic setting

We're looking for someone dependable, detail-oriented, and excited to help grow the native plants that restore habitat across our region.
