John Hanson Chapter Maryland Society SAR The Sons of the American Revolution is a patriotic, historical, and educational
organization open to all male descendants of Revolutionary War patriots.

Our objective is to perpetuate the memory of individuals who, by their service or sacrifice during The John Hanson Chapter MDSSAR was chartered on February 25, 1979 and is located in Prince George's County, Maryland.

The John Hanson Chapter was represented today at the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Cricket Hill/Gwynn's Island.. There were several ceremonies today, among them was a ceremony for the first French officer the was killed on July 9, 1776 in the American Revolution during the Battle of Cricket Hill. French Delegates dedicated a memorial plaque in his honor. Also, special awards were given to compatriots who have participated in Virginia's six 250th Anniversary ceremonies. At the beginning, there were 111 compatriots that participated in the first ceremony. Today, 30 compatriots, that included our own Compatriot Craig Smith, were awarded the Road to Virginia's Independence Perfect Medal for attending and participating in all 6 events in Virginia over the last 15 months.

On Saturday, May 2nd, the John Hanson Chapter along with the Pleasant Prospect Chapter DAR and The Society of the War of 1812 in the State of Maryland participated in a Grave Marking Ceremony for Doctor William Beanes. Dr. Beanes served as a Surgeon in the Revolutionary War and was aboard ship with Francis Scott Key during the bombardment of Fort McHenry where Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner.

Please mark your calendars. There will be a Patriot Grave Marking Ceremony for Dr. William Beanes, a Patriot of the American Revolution and the War of 1812, will held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, starting at 10am at 14701 Governor Oden Bowie Dr, Upper Marlboro. His grave site is located on the corner of Elm Street and Governor Oden Bowie Drive. There is plenty of parking on Governor Oden Bowie Drive in front of the County Administration Building. This event is being hosted by the Pleasant Prospect Chapter DAR and the John Hanson Chapter MDSSAR.
