Ever wonder how much Upper Darby actually recycles? ♻️💥
Every single year, our township’s Department of Public Works collects a massive 3,700 tons of single-stream recycling. That is about 308 tons—or a staggering 616,667 pounds—every single month! 💪
To put that into perspective, our monthly recycling alone weighs as much as:
• 🚌 15 fully loaded school buses stacked on top of each other.
• 🐋 3 blue whales (the largest animals on Earth!).
• 🏢 An entire 2-story warehouse packed tightly from floor to ceiling with crushed plastics, paper, and aluminum.
Shoutout to the roughly 30,000 households in Upper Darby doing their part every week. Let's keep filling those bins and keeping it out of the landfill! 💪🌎

Playing matchmaker for future monarch butterflies! 🐛🦋
Did you know that monarch caterpillars only eat milkweed leaves, and the butterflies rely on them to lay their eggs Unlike aggressive common milkweed that can take over a whole yard, Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) stays well-behaved, has gorgeous bright orange blooms, and acts like a magnet for butterflies and hummingbirds.
AND...Fall is a great time to broadcast native seeds so they can go through natural winter cold-stratification and wake up ready to grow in the spring! 🌿

Wow nature is so INCREDIBLE! 💪

Fall has entered the chat.

Quaking aspens turn brilliant shades of yellow each fall, but what you see above ground is only part of the story.

An entire stand of aspens can be connected underground by a single root system, meaning what looks like hundreds of individual trees may actually be one genetically identical organism. The trunks can live for a century, while the roots beneath them can survive for thousands of years.
