This Halloween season, Reach Out’s PIC–Perris coalition is shining a light on a spooky new drug trend hiding in plain sight.
Some products sold as “Cat’s Claw” herbal supplements are not what they claim to be. Instead of a natural herb, they may contain kratom derivatives like 7-OH, MPI, MGM-15, and MGM-16. These substances can act like strong drugs. People may think they are taking something safe from a smoke shop or online store, but they may be putting their health at risk without knowing it.
Why is this a concern?
• Cause dangerous side effects, especially when mixed with alcohol or other drugs
• Lead to dependence or withdrawal
• Be much stronger than the label suggests
• Put youth and young adults at higher risk if they experiment without understanding what they are taking
This community meeting will explain, in simple terms, what these “Cat’s Claw” products are, how they are being sold, what signs to look for, and how to start caring, honest conversations at home, in schools, and in neighborhood spaces. Together, we will share tools to keep Halloween—and every day—safer for our families.
