Last month, AIISF joined staff fom the Japanese American National Museum, Oakland Museum of California, and the Wing Luke Museum to co-host a roundtable session at the American Alliance of Museums annual conference in Philadelphia.

The session, entitled Isn’t It Time For An AANHPI Museum Association?, provided space for community members to share their successes and challenges as well as an opportunity to help envision a potential museum association for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander museums and museum professionals.

This session built upon similar sessions at the Western Museums Association conference and the California Association of Museums conference.

In 1916, a gifted Jewish violinist named Abram Haitowitsch arrived at the Angel Island Immigration Station. Back in Russia, he had performed for the Czar, but because he was blind, immigration officials flagged him for possible deportation.

While detained in the barracks, Haitowitsch began playing Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade.” The music drifted through an open window to the Commissioner of Immigration, who was so moved by the performance that he intervened in Haitowitsch’s case to secure his release.

We invite you to visit our latest Vault post to read Haitowitsch’s full story: http://www.aiisf.org/vault/spotlight.

Check out a new temporary exhibit at the Angel Island Immigration Museum from No Immigrants No Spice, an organization that celebrates diversity, builds community, and fosters understanding through food. This exhibit features stories and culinary traditions of four Bay Area chefs who are reshaping the local food scene.

To accompany the exhibit, AIISF’s BBQ Without Borders video series offers a glimpse into the lives of three of the chefs highlighted in the exhibit. Head over to Immigrant Voices to hear their stories in their own words: www.immigrant-voices.aiisf.org/tag/bbq-without-borders/.

In August 1940, after waiting and hoping amid mounting danger from the N***s, 14-year-old Lotte Loebl and her family finally secured visas from multiple countries and an American sponsor: necessities for them to escape Germany and occupied Europe together, unseparated. They crossed the continent by train to Yokohama, Japan, and then boarded a ship for the U.S.

When they reached San Francisco, they and several other Jewish families were detained at the Angel Island Immigration Station. Lotte’s father was held apart from the rest of the family. Lotte recalled, “we felt like we were prisoners. And not being able to be with my dad was hard.” After a relative managed to send the Loebls $200, officials decided that the family could be released.

Telling AIISF about her wartime experiences in 2010, Lotte explained: “It broke my heart the way everything was. But I was very fortunate to have my parents for a long time… we were very lucky to be a happy family.”

We are forever grateful for Lotte’s bravery in sharing her story with us. You can read it in full at https://ow.ly/OR5x50Z4mT7!

Today, the National Trust for Historic Preservation announced that the Angel Island Immigration Station has been named to their list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places for 2026. After the site was previously included on the list in 1999, Angel Island State Park and the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation partnered to restore the detention barracks and hospital building and opened new areas to the public.

Today, the site faces a unique combination of physical, environmental, and economic challenges. Significant financial investment is needed to protect and maintain Angel Island’s historic buildings, continue and expand public-facing programs, raise public awareness, and improve access for visitors.
