Today, Governor Pillen barred the use of Nebraska’s financial assistance program (known as TANF) for things like tattoos, psychic readings and video games, among other things.

This is not a real issue or serious problem; it's an invention that stigmatizes low-wage parents and families in Nebraska who are working hard to get by. And it further shows the depth of disconnection leaders have with real Nebraskans.

TANF helps parents that earn low wages to make ends meet. It's a program for basic necessities like rent, child care and utilities, and that is how support is used by roughly 2,700 families in Nebraska. Today's efforts from leaders in Nebraska are detached from reality and the opposite of what we need in Nebraska right now.

‼️Widespread gender checks make everyone less safe ‼️

“Fairness for Girls” (Initiative 442) is on the ballot in Nebraska this November. If passed by voters, this initiative would change Nebraska’s Constitution to limit girls’ participation in sports for all public schools – including publicly funded colleges and universities – and private school teams that compete against public school teams. It pretends to be about “fairness,” but it’s not.

YOU can speak out against this harmful ballot measure that’s sponsored by billionaires attempting to bully trans kids in Nebraska by joining us at one of the following public hearings in your district:

📅 CD1: Lincoln
State Capitol Building, Room 1525
Wednesday, October 14, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

📅 CD3: Kearney
Buffalo County Extension Building, Bison Room
Thursday, October 22, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

📅 CD2: Omaha
Millard Branch Omaha Public Library, Meeting Room 1
Saturday, October 24, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

⭐ Participating in sports helps kids stay healthy, sharpens their cognitive skills, and improves their mental health. ALL kids deserve access to these benefits!

Here we go again…

Nebraska has submitted a new USDA waiver to ban buying certain foods with SNAP benefits. If you remember, Nebraska’s original waiver was struck down by a Federal judge in June, 2026.

SNAP food restrictions are still a bad idea. There is no discernable difference between the food purchases made by SNAP participants and those who are not on the program. Even the USDA’s own studies show that these restrictions do very little to impact healthy eating but only add harmful stigma to the program.

The restriction is set to go into place December 1st.
A public comment period on the new waiver is open through Nov 1: https://www.regulations.gov/document/FNA_FRDOC_0001-0036

H.R.1, the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” is having a brutal impact on local families and communities. Its scope is breathtaking – from regressive tax changes to threatening the stability of rural hospitals.

Passed by Congress last year, with votes in favor from ALL of Nebraska’s Congressional delegation, this bill’s hundreds of provisions are taking food and health care coverage away from working Nebraskans and families – all to pay for tax cuts for corporations and the ultra-wealthy and to pour BILLIONS into federal ICE agents and mass detention facilities.

Swipe to learn more about the devastating impacts of this bill and on our blog: neappleseed.org/52015 ⤵️

“Terry has played a critical role in helping Nebraska Appleseed become the organization we are today. Early in his time on the Board he stepped into the Board President role and guided the organization through early growing pains. He recruited many people to get involved as Board members, donors, and supporters and ensured we had the policies and practices we needed to achieve our mission. He has been a steadfast ambassador for Appleseed and our work for almost 30 years and we are so grateful for his partnership in the fight for justice and opportunity for all Nebraskans.” – Becky Gould, Executive Director

The Jim Wolf Equal Justice Award recognizes Nebraskans who have made significant contributions to justice for all throughout their career. They have devoted themselves to public service to benefit the common good, and responded to adversarial and difficult circumstances facing others.
