Care for Real!
Carmen first joined Care for Real as a volunteer in January 2024 after being furloughed from work and finding herself with unexpected free time. Wanting to give back to her community, she took a friend’s recommendation to check out Care for Real and quickly found herself hooked.
Now, Carmen volunteers regularly at both of our locations. You can find her supporting Monday distributions at Edgewater and Thursday shifts in Rogers Park, greeting neighbors, helping guide shoppers through the pantry process, or serving as an expediter. She especially enjoys roles where she can talk with people and build connections.
For Carmen, the biggest highlight of volunteering is the sense of joy and community she experiences each shift.
“I always leave my shift at CfR feeling fulfilled and happy. It truly is such an enjoyable few hours, I know that I'm having a direct positive impact on my neighbors and community and helping people, and it is also a joyful environment. I always find myself smiling and laughing with other volunteers, staff, and guests and come away feeling like my heart is full!”
Through her time volunteering, Carmen says she has gained a deep appreciation for the resilience of the community Care for Real serves. Seeing neighbors greet staff like family and witnessing volunteers return week after week has reinforced her belief in the power of community support.
A fun fact about Carmen: Spanish was her first language, and her very first words were “más pan,” meaning “more bread.” It seems fitting that someone whose first words were about food would one day help ensure neighbors have access to it.
Thank you, Carmen, for the warmth, dedication, and smiles you bring to Care for Real each week. We are grateful to have you as part of the community helping neighbors overcome food insecurity with dignity.
