Step back in time at the 18th Century Market Fair at Fort Frederick State Park. Artisans, craftspeople, and sutlers from across the country will be set up with goods and demonstrations that bring early American life into focus.

The event runs April 23 through April 26, rain or shine. Expect plenty of walking on uneven ground, so plan accordingly. It’s a great way to spend a spring day outdoors with something a little different.

Bon anniversaire, and Happy Birthday to Louis Joseph, Marquis de Montcalm!

The famous commander of French Forces in North America from 1756 to 1759 was born this leap day in 1712 (although his birthday is also recorded as the 28th). Montcalm joined the French army before turning 13, and served for decades in Europe before being posted to America. There he earned his greatest victory at Ticonderoga in 1758 but ultimately died from wounds suffered during the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759, that witnessed the fall of Québec.

You can check out some of his letters and dispatches, preserved in Fort Ticonderoga's collection, on our online collections database: https://fortticonderoga.pastperfectonline.com/person/D34162E9-6460-4A2D-8FF0-686669524290
