What an honor it was to join our friends Mahsa Vahdat and Marjan Vahdat earlier this month at Stanford Live’s Bing Concert Hall as well as SF State for performances of their work! We’re so grateful for these beautiful moments ♥️

We loved visiting the Musical Instrument Museum - MIM in Phoenix earlier this month! In between our soundcheck and concerts, we took a moment to explore the collections and discovered some familiar objects, including Hardanger fiddles, a phonoharp made by Kronos collaborator Walter Kitundu, an Apache violin (Laura Ortman x Three Bones!), a toy violin (from Terry Riley’s “Cusp of Magic”), and a toy piano that we actually used in the concert to play Philip Glass' Modern Love Waltz ! 🐸

In September, we took a trip up to Ohio to play a concert as a part of Chamber Music Cincinnati! Our mission in between soundcheck and the performance? To acquire some of Cincinnati's famous Graeter's ice cream for a post-concert treat!

This week, we are looking forward to playing two concerts at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, AZ- The largest museum of its type in the world!

As a quartet, we love pushing the sonic boundaries of our instruments, and have even incorporated new instruments into our ensemble over the years, from the beautiful electroacoustic creations of inventor Walter Kitundu to composer Nicole Lizeé’s amazing menagerie of bells, toys, omnichords, stylophones, groan tubes, and ‘thingamagoops’ that accompany us on tour. We can’t wait to be inspired by everything that Musical Instrument Museum - MIM has to offer!

Today, we’re wishing a very happy 90th birthday to our friend, composer Steve Reich! We are so fortunate to have collaborated with Steve on so many truly incredible pieces over the decades, from “Different Trains” (1988), to “Triple Quartet” (1999) and “WTC 9/11” (2010). A pioneer in minimalism, tape loops, and phase shifting, Steve Reich has profoundly impacted the sound of contemporary music, and the sound of Kronos.

From our founder, David:
Happy Birthday, Steve! 90 years!!
I hope you are in high spirits and will enjoy this year where we and musicians from around the world are celebrating you and your work! Wow!!! Different Trains, Triple Quartet, WTC 9/11 are high points for Kronos. Thank you for the amazing additions to our concerts and to music.
###x David

Today marks 10 years since we released The Sea Ranch Songs with our friend and collaborator Aleksandra Vrebalov! Commissioned by the community of The Sea Ranch in celebration of the famed California seaside retreat’s 50th birthday, The Sea Ranch Songs is a multimedia work, featuring visuals by Andrew Lyndon, as well as field recordings gathered from the coastal community and its natural surroundings.

We’ve loved returning to The Sea Ranch over the years- It’s a truly special place within the world of Kronos 💚🩵

Last month, we were grateful to be part of a very thoughtful talk led by Cultura Nova Festival’s program curator Marsha Simon, called “Responding to Now.” It was an inspiring discussion that brought together several of the groups performing at the festival ♥️
