Historic Preservation Alliance of Colorado Springs We are a 501(c)3 membership-based nonprofit advocacy organization, providing leadership and inspiration to preserve, protect and promote historic places.

In the recent past, Colorado Springs’ historic places and spaces were threatened or outright lost in alarming numbers through demolition and development. The character of our city was rapidly changing and the visual memory of our heritage was vanishing. That’s when a group of passionate citizens – advocates for history and architecture – formed the Historic Preservation Alliance of Colorado Springs. Our all-volunteer member-supported nonprofit organization has grown since 1999 to become the leading voice for preservation in the Pikes Peak region through advocacy, education, events and strategic alliances. We work with property owners, neighborhoods, organizations and municipal government to protect, preserve, promote and celebrate the historic places that define our stunning community at the foot of Pikes Peak.

🚂🏛️ Some preservation stories take years to unfold, and the Grand Junction Depot is one worth following.

Built in 1906, the Grand Junction Depot once welcomed travelers into a booming Western Colorado community and served as a gateway to one of the country's most celebrated rail corridors. For 85 years, it operated as a passenger and freight depot before closing in 1991 and eventually falling into decades of vacancy and deterioration.

Recognized as one of Colorado's Most Endangered Places in 2010, the depot has had a long road toward preservation, but today, momentum is real. Owners Veronica Sanchez and Dustin Anzures, along with the Friends of GJ Union Depot and a growing network of community partners, are working to bring this landmark back to life. Window restoration is underway, critical infrastructure improvements are moving forward, and significant new funding is helping tackle major needs like the roof and utilities. 🚉

🎥 As part of Colorado 150: Preserving the Past, CBS Colorado is sharing the story of the Grand Junction Depot and the people who refused to give up on it.

❤️ CBS Colorado and Colorado Preservation, Inc. are partnering to raise funds for Colorado's Most Endangered Places. Now through December 31, your donation to CPI's Endangered Places Program helps us work alongside communities across the state to protect threatened historic places and give more places like the Grand Junction Depot a chance at a new future.
