Everyone changes the world a little differently.

Some teach, some organize, some build, some look out for the people around them. Every movement needs all four.

What does every girl deserve? To be safe. To learn. To be heard. To help shape what comes next.

This International Day of the Girl, the global call is to end child marriage and invest in girls' rights. An estimated one in five girls are married before 18 (UNICEF), often cutting short an education and narrowing the choices that should be theirs to make.

A future girls can truly choose doesn't arrive on its own. It's built, community by community, by leaders creating the conditions that make real choice possible: safer schools, protection from violence, and a real seat in the decisions that shape their lives. In Kenya, Agnes Nzisa. In India, Ajay Kumar. Across Guatemala and Honduras, Juany Garcia and Emérita Valdez.

Swipe to see the future girls choose, and meet a few of the leaders building it. 🌎

For years, Rise Up Leader Sadia Khan has worked to close the legal loopholes that leave survivors of forced marriage without protection in California. She spent that time building trust with lawmakers and bringing hard data to shift the conversation narrative and inform policy change.

This week, that work became law. California signed AB 2534, which recognizes forced marriage as abuse under the state's Domestic Violence Prevention Act and gives survivors a dedicated legal tool to seek protection.

With funding and support from Rise Up Together, Sadia and the Family Violence Law Center built this through their survivor-informed Freedom to Choose campaign. We're proud to partner with them to help turn bold ideas into lasting change.

One year independent. Seventeen years of impact. ✨

A year ago, Rise Up Together became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit. But our story didn't start there.

Since 2009, Rise Up Together has worked alongside visionary local leaders advancing gender equity and justice in their own communities, backing the people closest to the solutions with the funding, training, and networks to make transformational change last. Today that network is more than 1,080 leaders strong, whose work has contributed to 246+ new and improved laws, policies, and programs and reached more than 251 million people around the world.

Becoming independent on October 1, 2025 built on that history and opened a new chapter in our evolution as a global organization.

One year on, we're celebrating how far we've come and the leaders and partners who made this work possible, and looking forward to deepening our impact in the future.

New era. Same mission. More impact. 🌎

When Denise Raquel Dunning was 12, she was riding a train in her mother's native Buenos Aires when a girl not much older than her stepped on, carrying a baby and pulling a toddler behind her. As the girl moved through the train asking for money and food, one passenger after another looked away.

"I just remember feeling so angry and so ashamed that no one wanted to help her," Denise recalls. "I remember promising myself that someday I would do something to make things better for girls like her."

That promise became a career, and eventually Rise Up Together, the organization she co-founded and leads today.

How to do that work took longer to learn. Early in a Fulbright fellowship in Honduras, Denise watched a well-funded project keep failing: chickens meant to support women's livelihoods kept dying. When her boss asked what they should do, Denise asked something simpler. What do the women say about why the chickens keep dying? No one had asked them yet.

That question still shapes how we work. We look for local leaders already creating change in their communities, and we partner with them to help turn bold ideas into lasting change.

"We know that we don't know the answers," Denise says. "Instead, we find local leaders and organizations who do have the answers and support their vision for change."

I had the pleasure of joining Goalkeepers this week during UNGA, and what an event it was. A room full of people from all over the world, all asking the same question: what will the next decade of AI mean for the communities we care about?

One thing that stuck with me: the same tools that could open doors could just as easily leave people behind. It comes down to who gets to build them, and who they get built for.

That's what I kept coming back to. Gender equity and justice don't move forward because a new technology arrives. It moves forward because local leaders decide how change happens in their own communities, and because the rest of us show up to back them. I left thinking about the people already doing that work, in their own languages, on their own terms. That's where I want us pointed. 🌎

What happens when local leaders have the funding, tools, and relationships to turn their vision for change into reality?

In 2025, Rise Up Leaders answered. Together, they advanced 13 new and improved laws, policies, and programs that positively impacted 24.7 million people worldwide.

In Nairobi, Agnes Nzisa helped drive the development and adoption of a county policy that strengthens how schools prevent, report, and respond to gender-based violence. It has already reached more than 1.29 million students and teachers.

Different countries. Different challenges. Different solutions. One thing in common: lasting change is strongest when the people who know their communities best help shape it.

Our 2025 annual report is live, and it's full of stories like Agnes's. Read it, then share it with someone who could use a reason for hope right now.

On International Equal Pay Day, the number is familiar: around the world, women still earn about 78 cents for every dollar men earn (UN Women).

But behind that number are leaders working to change the systems that shape women's economic opportunities. Rise Up Leaders like Tlou Seopa in South Africa, Shivani Priya in India, and Fadera Williams in Nigeria are advancing economic opportunity for women and girls in their own communities, from strengthening financial inclusion and protections for workers to expanding access to STEM education.

This International Equal Pay Day, we're honored to stand alongside the leaders and communities working toward a world where women and girls are valued and paid equally.
