📣A New Chapter, But Our Commitment to the Movement Continues!

SMA Movement Family, After three fruitful years fighting alongside you, we will no longer be serving in our current positions as Regional Staff Organizers of the Southern Movement Assembly. It’s with mixed emotions that we move away from this role, but our commitment to our shared work remains as strong as ever. We want to make sure we continue to stay connected, especially as we work towards the goals of the Southern Movement Assembly and other movements that align with our mission.

We truly believe in the strength and resilience of this community, and though our positions may change, our dedication to our collective struggle remains unwavering. We will continue to work in solidarity with y'all as freedom fighters in the South, just in a different capacity. We encourage you to stay engaged with the Southern Movement Assembly formation and other avenues for collective action. Our fight for justice and liberation continues, and we are stronger when we come together in community.

We both look forward to remaining in touch and supporting each other through the work we do, however it may evolve. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to the movement and for the trust you’ve placed in us during the last three years! The work is far from over, and we are excited for what emerges ahead as we continue to build together.

Let's Stay Connected, Stay in Community, and Stay Ready to Push Forward Toward A JUST & LIBERATED FUTURE!

At the Southern Movement Assembly 11 in September 2024, we recognized that all crises would intensify in this time of rising fascism. The Get Ready Taskforce prepared our communities to protect, defend, resist, and build. We are synthesizing our plan of action to coordinate our efforts, build the infrastructure we need, and grow movement power.

Join the call on February 26th and renew our shared commitment to organizing collective action on all our intersecting frontlines of racial, economic, gender, and climate justice.

Stay connected. Find your people.

In times of crisis, it is easy to become isolated and disconnected from our people and our communities. During recent Get Ready Taskforce meetings, long-time organizers across the U.S. South underscored the importance of being in community and finding our people. We need each other, and we are stronger when we come together and organize for collective power.

Some thoughts from organizers across the South:

1. Our movements are built on relationships and trust. Reach out to people near you. Get to know the folks on your block and in your neighborhood. Start local. Start small. Start with your crew.

2. Mutual aid is collective power. As an exercise, write down FIVE people who you want to be in immediate communication with during times of crisis, emergency, and beyond. Make it a mission to check in on them this week.

3. Identify the people you consider your community and work to nurture those relationships. Have conversations about what it would mean to support and protect one another.

4. Create readiness plans with your chosen people! Invite 5-10 people to a space to discuss the current moment, name shared goals, and make plans to continue to work together.

5. Gather your people together in communion and celebration of each other. For instance, this month Get Ready Taskforce partners in Greenville, SC are hosting a human rights mixtape weekend, inclusive of music, art, education, strategy mobilization, and onboarding of new allies. In Savannah, GA, Get Ready Taskforce partners are hosting fish frys and spoken word poets in local parks. Other groups across the region have committed to regular block walks, porch sits, and coming together not only in collective action, but also in deliberate relationship-building.

The work of liberation is everyday, and we can’t do it alone. Let’s find our people, strengthen our ties, and remember that Southern strategies of movement-building and organized, collective action are centered in solid relationships.

As we get ready for whatever happens in these elections, we are hearing about intimidation, harassment, and misinformation at polling stations.

Let's keep each other safe this Tuesday!

Get your plan ready: stay informed, know how you will enter and exit the location, know your rights. Call 1.866.OurVote for more info

Go with people: Go in pairs or in groups and support each other. (If you have to go alone, text someone when you go and when you leave.)

Stay steady: De-escalate tension when you can, record and report problems, debrief and share incidents with your crew to build a collective plan.

We believe that fear, confusion, and isolation in times of crisis are countered with collective action to protect each other, share information, and connect across issues and geographies.

At SMA 11, we affirmed a strategy and short term plan to protect our communities and build infrastructure to defend our people from climate crisis, political violence, and state repression.

As organizers on the ground in rural, Black, youth, Muslim, worker, and trans and q***r communities, we anticipate different levels of intimidation, misinformation, and crisis in the coming weeks.

We have learned from 20 years of resistance after Katrina and the last 5 years of a global pandemic how to support and care for ourselves.

No matter the outcome of the elections, we are committed to building movement infrastructure and power.

In these tumultuous times of climate crisis and political violence, we know we have to gather, make plans, and engage our people to build power. No matter what happens in these elections, our movements need stronger infrastructure to support each other and protect our communities.

Join freedom fighters from around the region to share the synthesis from the SMA 11 in Little Rock, Arkansas at the end of September!

State of the South Call on Wed October 30th at 6:30pm EST / 5:30pm CT

We ask ourselves: If we were better organized, what would be possible? 25 delegations at the 11th Southern Movement Assembly affirmed a strategy to support and coordinate community organizing on-the-ground across the South to protect our communities, prepare our people for potential turmoil, and share what’s really happening across the U.S. South - before, during, and after the elections on November 5th.

The Get Ready Taskforce is a regional organizing drive to share skills, resources, and ideas for collective action we can all take and to coordinate better state to state. Join the call to learn more!

Who wants to build and put in motion a regional movement strategy for liberation in the South so we can be organized and ready no matter who is in office?!!!

This September SMA 11 will be focused on building a shared Southern political strategy to grow our forces in a time of rising fascism and ecological, economic, and social crisis. Representatives will gather to discuss and affirm our plans for growing regional power and infrastructure in 2025.

We need every frontline in the South to represent. We cannot do this alone or isolated. WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY TO SMA 11:

Groups and organizations across the South who either have planned a People’s Movement Assembly (PMA) and/or are actively planning a PMA this fall or spring/summer of 2025.

Delegations should include 2 people who represent the leadership of the organization, leadership meaning: people who set strategy, move work, and are accountable to their base.

PLEASE SELECT YOUR DELEGATES AND FILL OUT THE FORM AS A DELEGATION BY AUGUST 27th!

Thank you for joining last month’s Freedom and Survival Study Hall Series on Part I of Understanding the Alt-Right Manifesto for Fascism and White Supremacy. Again we want to apologize for the vile disturbances that you witnessed and uplift gratitude for the grace and steadfast commitment each participant had with continuing to engage in dialogue. Special appreciations to organizing members of the SMA Freedom and Survival School Work team, and to our guest organizers.

As we remain committed to our security practices we have agreed to postpone tonight’s call until further notice. This will give space for SMA work team members to implement next steps from Part I’s discussion and deepen our tech security for Part II.

NEW DATE ALERT ‼️
Regional Monthly Call: People’s Governance in Global and Southern Movements - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28th 2024 5:30pm CT/ 6:30pm ET
—
Social Movements throughout history and around the world have used assemblies to make decisions. Movements, particularly in the Global South - Africa, Asia, and Latin America - have used assemblies to instigate people-powered change.

In the 21st century, the Southern Movement is building power through radical democratic, participatory spaces that respect and trust the collective voice of people in struggle. This month join us to assess what tools we can learn from Global movements who are practicing peoples governance. What impacts have they made and how can the assembly process advance the Southern Freedom Movement forward in this moment?

Join us on Wednesday, August 28th for the
SMA Monthly Regional Call!

SMA State of the South Calls advance the Southern Freedom Movement in the 21st Century. Rooted in the historic legacies of the South, organizers, participants of assemblies, formations, and groups come together on monthly calls to share what we are learning about the political moment. We work on tactics, shared strategies, and leadership development. We build transformative relationships through the centering of collective healing and joy, and we practice governance in real time through the carrying out of the SMA Multi Year Action Plan!

The SMA State of the South Monthly Calls happen on the last Wednesday of the month are grounded in our collective principle of Resist and Build framework: We believe political direction is determined by big picture analysis grounded in the struggle to dismantle white supremacy, economic exploitation, and colonialism while simultaneously building decolonization processes for liberation of all people. We do this through landscape assessment, data and resource sharing, political and popular education models, and frontline spokescouncil process.
