Alumni Spotlight: Michael Gonzalez!

CVLLA is thrilled to congratulate our Alum, Michael Gonzalez, on being selected to serve as a board director for the California Association for Institutional Research (CAIR)!

“I’m very excited to begin serving on the CAIR Board and to advocate for community colleges, the Central Valley, and the Latino community in the field of institutional research. I also want to give a big shoutout to my CVLLA cohort for their genuine support and encouragement throughout the entire process. Having them in my corner has made this achievement even more meaningful.”

That is the essence of CVLLA: supporting leaders who take their seat at the table and use it to advocate for their communities. Michael’s appointment reflects the dedication, talent, and heart he brings to everything he does.

Congratulations, Michael!

We’re humbled and proud to share that CVLLA has been recognized as an Unsung Hero by KMPH Fox 26 and the Central California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month!

In 2017, CVLLA began as a vision shared by Latino leaders, including former Fresno State President Dr. Joseph Castro, who believed the Central Valley deserved more of its own coming home to build it up.

The truth is: the grass isn’t greener on the other side. It’s greener where you water it. And this familia has been growing in the Central Valley ever since.

Congratulations to the graduates of CVLLA Cohort 8! Throughout the Academy, this cohort has strengthened their leadership, built meaningful connections, and deepened their commitment to creating positive change across the Central Valley.

Thank you to our keynote speaker, Madera County Supervisor Leticia Gonzalez, for sharing her leadership journey and words of encouragement; to our invited guests and CVLLA Board for joining us in celebrating this milestone; and to Fresno City College for hosting this special evening.

To Cohort 8: congratulations on this achievement. We look forward to supporting your leadership journey and the many milestones ahead.

During Session 4 of the 2026 Academy, CVLLA Cohort 8 came together at Fresno City College for an interactive session facilitated by Dr. Yammilette Rodriguez.

Through mock scenarios and reflection, participants had the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned, strengthen their communication, and continue building the skills they will carry into their communities.

🌟 Session 2 is a wrap!

On June 6, Cohort 8 convened at the MCC Global Center in Reedley for the second session of the 2026 Central Valley Latino Leadership Academy.

Facilitated by Dina González-Piña, the session invited participants to center their roots in their leadership journey. Drawing from Juana Bordas' Salsa, Soul, and Spirit and The Power of Latino Leadership, the Cohort engaged in deep reflection and open dialogue — exploring identity, culture, and what it means to lead from a place of lived experience.

Participants were also asked to bring a cultural item that represents them — and the stories shared in that room reminded everyone why this work matters.
CVLLA is grateful to walk this journey alongside Cohort 8 as they build the kind of leadership that lifts communities.

As Cohort 8 prepares for Session 2, CVLLA is excited to spotlight one of the leaders helping guide the conversation.

Meet Dina Gonzalez-Pina, Executive Director of the West Coast Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) and a longtime advocate for equity, community engagement, and values-based leadership.

With decades of experience working across communities and organizations, Dina brings a thoughtful approach to leadership that centers relationship-building, cultural understanding, and service.

We are thrilled to welcome Dina back and look forward to the insights she will share with Cohort 8.
