This week, Beth Nabors attended the ribbon cutting of Arlington Heights Memorial Library's new bookmobile (or library on wheels)!

Libraries are vital community resources. They not only provide free materials for education and entertainment, but they also provide free resources such as item and tool rentals, paperwork assistance, programs, community events, and more. At JOURNEYS, we value the importance of libraries, and our clients utilize libraries often. So we're happy to celebrate the increased accessability to libraries through this new bookmobile and can't wait to see it around more often in our community!

A heat advisory has hit our area, making September feel like the middle of summer. For many, it means turning up the AC again. But for our neighbors living through homelessness, it means facing temperatures that can cause heat illnesses. It's important to find a place to stay cool, especially when fans and shade aren't enough

Which is why JOURNEYS is open every day of the week as a cooling center. If you or someone you know needs a safe, cool place to be during this spike of hot weather, come in.

"During the first year after being housed, participants saw a 91% reduction in emergency department visits and an 89% reduction in inpatient hospital days..." were one of the findings sited from a 5 year report on the Flexible Housing Pool (FHP) of Chicago and Cook County.

Housing and homelessness are not simple issues, but it is simple to see how being housed improves your health and safety. Decreased hospital visits also means more money in their pockets that allows them to continue to afford their home and decreases the likelyhood of falling into medical debt.

This is why at JOURNEYS, we not only providing services to help families and individuals experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity get their home, but we consistently advocate for policies like FHP to get people housed. We can't end homelessness alone. It requires community, care, and support.

"Everyone deserves a safe, stable place to call home, and this report shows that supportive housing is not only the right thing to do, it is a proven investment in the health and well-being of our residents and our city.” -Mayor Brandon Johnson

Need an idea for a donation drive for your group? How about collecting something JOURNEYS always needs?

Our most consistent need is undergarments. Specifically:
- Men's boxers sizes M, L, and XL
- Women's underwear size S, M, and L
- Women's sports bra sizes M, L, and XL
- Women's ankle socks

Undergarments are part of our daily outfits. Having access to a fresh pair every single day is something we take for granted. Help those experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity in our community not worry about this basic need and focus on their journey back home.

Last week, Amadea and Isiah dropped off OVER 200 cares kits containing supplies to help families and individuals experiencing homelessness in our communities! That's over 200 kits full of items ranging from snacks to on-the-go care supplies to feminine hygiene products to personal hygiene essentials. It's incredible!

These kits were put together by a team Amadea and Isiah are a part of, who create and hand out these kits to people experiencing homelessness throughout Chicago. This year, this team decided to spread the love here too. We truly appreciate everyone who has been a part of this project! Your kindness and generousity will reach thousands in our community.
