In what marks a historic moment for federal accountability, Democrats are drafting powerful legislation named for Alex Pretti, the 37-year-old Minneapolis nurse k*lled by federal immigration agents on January 24.
The measure would strip qualified immunity from ICE and Customs and Border Protection agents if the party wins control of Congress in the 2026 midterms.
Pretti, a VA Medical Center intensive care nurse, was sh*t after agents pepper-sprayed and tackled him, just days after ICE agents k*lled another Minneapolis resident, Renee Good, on January 7.
A related bill, the ICE OUT Act, filed by Representative Dan Goldman, aims to end qualified immunity, with Goldman condemning what he termed an “out-of-control, untrained, secret ICE paramilitary.”
Representative Ayanna Pressley has separately pushed the Qualified Immunity Abolition Act, allowing victims to sue federal officers for civil rights violations.
This momentum extends beyond Democrats' usual base; Republican Representative James Comer suggested ICE operate elsewhere, and Representative Michael McCaul called for an investigation.
While the Trump administration has defended the agents by claiming self-defense and pointing to Pretti’s holstered handgun, bystander videos appear to show him unarmed in his hands and fully subdued when agents opened fire.
A Justice Department investigation has yet to release any public findings.
