After losing my Brittany spaniel unexpectedly last summer, I decided it was time for another dog, and more Brittany energy in my life.
After some research, I was able to get on the list with a reputable breeder for a litter to be born this spring. A week before my birthday, I woke up to a text with the happy news that the pups had been born and there were five healthy females, which was my preference.
In late April, I made a “turn-and-burn” trip to Kansas after work on a Friday and back home on a Sunday, and picked up my pup on the Saturday in between.
The breeder had sent me photos of all the female pups and I had been following their postings on Facebook until they were nine weeks old and I was able to make the trip.
As the breeder released the females from the kennel, one in particular bolted to me and dove underneath me as I was squatted down. When I tried to stand up to see the rest, the pup climbed up my lap, crawled into my arms, and put her head on my shoulder. I instantly felt like she had picked me and that she was “the one.”
I spent some time playing with the others, but this one kept coming back, and was always the first one to come running to me. That’s how I knew she was the one.
Now, I’m looking forward to many years of hunting, camping, hiking, and cuddles.
