We uplift the past and the ongoing steps towards freedom in our country. We hope you'll join us in recognizing this significant day and the journey ahead during Community Organizing for Racial Equity - CORE's Festival. Happening June 20 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Chatham County Fairgrounds.

Today, we recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved people that they were free… more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The news marked a pivotal moment in American history and gave rise to a celebration that spread across the country as Black families carried the tradition to new communities.

Juneteenth is a time to reflect on our nation's history, honor the resilience and contributions of Black Americans and reaffirm the ongoing work of building a more inclusive democracy for all.

🚨 ACTION ALERT: Contact Your Legislators 🚨

You cast your ballot. You followed the rules. Should your vote still be challenged after Election Day?

House Bill 958 (HB 958) would move North Carolina in the wrong direction by expanding post-election challenges and increasing the chances that eligible voters could face additional scrutiny after they've already cast their ballots.

Election laws should make it easier for eligible voters to participate and harder for eligible votes to be discarded. HB 958 does the opposite.

📞 Contact your state legislators and urge them to OPPOSE HB 958.

The progress made toward equality for LGBTQ+ people has been driven by advocates, organizers, voters, and community members who worked to make their voices heard.

Democracy is strongest when every person can participate fully and freely. This Pride Month, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and reaffirm our commitment to an inclusive democracy for all.

What a whirlwind, uplifting time it’s been! ✨

Last week, we joined over 40 League of Women Voters of North Carolina, Inc. members to speak to state legislators about pressing voting issues including voting rights and voter access.

On Friday, we showed back up in Raleigh — this time to hit the streets for and stand up for public education, a core tenet of democracy. 🗳️

We wound down the week on Saturday at the annual LWVNC council meeting in Durham, an energizing and inspiring day of reflection and strategy for the year ahead. We heard from incredible speakers, including League of Women Voters of the US President Dianna Wynn.
