League of Women Voters Orange Durham Chatham Counties NC We empower voters and defend democracy through advocacy, education, and litigation. Whew! Now that all THAT is out of the way, let’s get to know each other. Post!

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy. We welcome a diversity of opinions and encourage discussion of the issues on this page. We will be posting news, stories from other Leagues, and suggesting ways you can get involved. LWVODC hosted an excellent Hot Topics lecture on climate change by 4 PhD scientists this morning. We learned about the "settled science"(what we know for sure) and the areas of uncertainty. It was enlightening to learn that CO2 increase, average temperature rise and gradual sea level rise can be linked with climate change while extreme rainfall, droughts and the ice sheet collapse may not be caused by climate change alone.

Governor Josh Stein has publicly stated he intends to veto HB 958 if it reaches his desk. The bill has advanced through the General Assembly and is awaiting further action.

The League of Women Voters of North Carolina opposes HB 958 because we believe it would make voting less accessible and create unnecessary burdens for voters and election administration.

Now is the time to make your voice heard. Read the Advocacy Alert below to learn how you can thank Governor Stein for his public commitment and encourage him to continue supporting accessible, secure and fair elections.

Great turnout for ODC's Lunch and Learn where Alexandra Forter Sirota from NC Budget & Tax Center and Kevin Leonard from the NC Association of County Commissioners explained the downside risks of adopting new constitutional limits on the state income tax and on property taxes levied by city and county governments. These limits could hamper response to emergencies and not allow local governments to meet emerging needs of their citizens. They could also reduce equity within our tax system.
