🎹 Progress Update: Bringing a Spinet Piano Back to Life 🎹
There’s something satisfying about seeing fresh parts go into an instrument that has faithfully served a family for decades.
This week I’ve been replacing damper felts on a spinet piano action. The photo shows the new felts being installed—those bright white and red felts will eventually help each note stop cleanly when the key is released.
Damper felts may be small, but they play a huge role in a piano’s performance. When they become worn, hardened, or misshapen, notes can continue ringing after the key is released, affecting the clarity and beauty of the music.
Spinet pianos are among the most labor-intensive uprights to service because the action must be carefully removed and partially disassembled to access the dampers. It’s meticulous work, but seeing the transformation makes it worthwhile.
As I work through this restoration, I’m reminded of Psalm 33:3:
“Sing unto Him a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise.”
A well-maintained piano makes it easier to do exactly that.
