ANOTHER MILESTONE: More than 2900 people have now "liked" Protect Rhode Island Brook Trout on Facebook. Although mostly from our region, this number includes folks from throughout North America, South America, the British Isles, Europe, and Asia. They all care about wild things and wild places. While the immediate focus of our advocacy group is on Rhode Island waters, our effort is also symbolic and resonates with others striving to make a difference. If you have not yet done so, please help us by liking our page; if you have already done so, please ask your friends to consider doing so. More people demonstrating support for responsible management of our natural resources means more "clout for trout", their habitat, and the environment in general. Thank you all!

YES:

Stockers do interfere with spawning wild trout. Pictured here is a rainbow (scarred) barging onto a brook trout redd. The rainbow may be seeking eggs for breakfast. Or, given the genetic mash-up that is a stocked fish, it's scrambled instincts may have it striving to mate with the female brookie. RIDEM tells us that fish stocked in the spring do not survive long enough to be a problem in the Fall. Experience on the water puts the lie to that. A non-issue insofar as RIDEM stocks over wild brook trout for the Columbus Day holiday ... just in time for brook trout spawning.

WYATT FORD AGAIN: Up to his elbows in PEI sea run fontinalis. Electro-fishing yielded 94 on this day. The young man has begun his PhD studies at the university on the island. His work beats "analyzing" the significance of cows in the literature of James Joyce!

TIS THE SEASON: It's courtship time for S. fontinalis (photo, Shaun Thomson). These highly evolved critters respond to the shorter days and increasingly colder water by getting ready to make the next generation. The coloration of males becomes more dramatic and the less colorful females become gravid with eggs. Fishermen in the know will be attentive at this time of year, trying to avoid wading on graveled areas. They will also refrain from angling because they know the trout are already under stress.

GOOD INTENTIONS: Some years ago RIDEM sought to keep horses from entering this stream in our Arcadia Management area, while allowing fishermen and others to approach. Erosion has cleared the way for any and all, carrying fine material into the water. This weekend's powerful Northeaster may bury the coarse gravel required for redd building next month. Re-engineering is overdue.

PARADISE LOST: All photos here are of local fish going back to the 1970s. There were brook trout throughout RI. You could take a kid fishing put him on to wild fish and even keep a few. Numerous factors have contibuted to the decline of our only native salmonid and RIDEM's stocking of hatchery reared trout is one of them. Especially impactful is the agency's practice of stocking waters that can support wild brook trout. For this reason PRIBT has for years been advocating for the cessation of stocking in the upper Wood River watershed, as per the recommendation of the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture. Resistence has been fierce but our proposal for the Wood has been endorsed by every environmental organization in this state (70+) except RIDEM. It is, however, now under consideration by RIDEM.

A this very moment you all can make it happen. Please let your preference for wild trout fishing only (C&R) on the three mile stretch of the upper Wood known to to RIDEM director. His email address is: [email protected]
