"We have 26 beds, and generally speaking, 25 beds are full at any given night,” Wykoff said on KPCW’s “Local News Hour” Oct. 1. “We are working really hard to find some solution to meet those needs as folks are increasing their engagement with the organization and reaching out for help when they’re in imminent danger.”

Peace House says more survivors are seeking emergency shelter and the domestic violence cases it sees are becoming more severe. The nonprofit also marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Relationships don't fall apart in one day. They drift over time, usually because the small things go unsaid. The couples who make it aren't the ones who never struggle. They're the ones who learn to turn toward each other instead of away. Consider "dyadic coping:" engaging in joint problem solving, sharing feelings, and committing to working through things together. Checking in early, before frustration turns into isolation or resentment, is how violence is prevented before it ever starts. It's not about being perfect. It's about being willing.

“There’s a space for all of us in this movement, whether that is, ‘I’m able to write a check,’ or ‘I’m able to pick up groceries every week for the emergency shelter,’ or maybe, ‘I have additional time and emotional bandwidth to provide crisis intervention to a survivor,’” Aguilera said.

One hundred and seventy-five volunteers contributed their time and energy over the past year, not to mention all those who have volunteered for the more than 30 years Peace House has been improving lives.

A few minutes of your time could offer your friend the support they need to start healing or seek support. Starting the conversation can feel awkward, but it’s better to be a little uncomfortable than to regret not speaking up. Here are some helpful questions to gently check in:

“Hey, I’ve noticed you seem a bit different lately. How are you doing?”
“Is there anything on your mind you’d like to talk about?”
“I’ve been thinking about you. How have you been feeling?”
“Is there anything you’re struggling with that I can help you with?”

Keep your tone gentle and your body language open. Sometimes, just knowing someone cares can make all the difference.

Since the early 20th century (Merriam-Webster records the first use in 1921), “locker room talk” has meant men’s discourse that displays attitudes typical of that space – particularly vulgar and coarse language. The locker room is not just a literal place, but also a shorthand for a kind of male socializing and the discourse that arises out of that social milieu. Locker room talk is not harmless. And it often normalizes a number of unhealthy behaviors that contribute to homophobia and relationship abuse. Learn to identify when you’re being complicit in “small talk” that does not reflect your personal beliefs. This is the first step toward changing the behavior.
