Every Thursday since 2018, the Community Change Center has facilitated a volunteer-led Reentry Reading Group in Westville Correctional, where participants learn life skills, practice critical thinking, and build a community which can continue to support them after they have been released from incarceration. One of our long-term group participants was released from prison this week and left behind the following letter:
“Hello, everyone. Thank you all for everything - the books, conversations, information, but most of all for being such real and genuine people. For all of us working through this struggle in our lives, you make all of this feel not so bad and help so many. The world needs more people just like you and I will miss you all. You’re book club family to me. Thank God I made it.”
While we are always grateful for our volunteers, this letter so beautifully describes the deep impact made by those who dedicate their time to supporting those who often feel they don’t deserve it. We could not do this work without everyone who continues to show up and offer second chances, community, and hope to our neighbors.
