Antisemitism has been referred to as, “the canary in the coal mine.” And the growth of antisemitism is not just a concern for Jews—it is a warning sign for all regarding the health of democracy itself. When any group is targeted with misinformation, discrimination and/or violence, it undermines the democratic values of equality, pluralism and the rule of law.

The League of Women Voters of Fremont, Newark & Union City will host the next installment of our speaker series, Defending Our Democracy, on the critical topic of antisemitism. This FREE community program examines the rise of antisemitism and its broader implications for our democratic institutions and civic life. This event will address how antisemitism—one of the world’s oldest forms of hatred—continues to evolve in modern society. It will explore the origins of antisemitism, how it is both alike and different from other forms of bigotry, how it fuels broader forms of antidemocratic extremism, and how it ultimately makes everyone feel less safe. Additionally, we will learn how to counter antisemitism on both a personal level and at the community level.

Please join the League of Women Voters for this FREE program on the Constitutional Issue of Separation of Church and State.

Saturday, March 7, 2026
10:00 - 11:30 am
Niles Discovery Church

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”

These few words at the beginning of First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution are commonly referred to as, “The Separation of Church and State.” Simply stated, the separation of church and state protects the right of every person to believe or not believe as one chooses.

Disagreements regarding religious liberties and government neutrality continue to surface in courtrooms, classrooms, communities and within families. The role of religion in public life quite often shows up on the docket the U.S. Supreme Court, which has made some monumental decisions on this issue.

The League of Women Voters of Fremont, Newark & Union City (LWVFNUC) invites the entire community to the next installment of our Speaker Series, DEFENDING OUR DEMOCRACY.

Our guest speaker is Camille Didelot, representing Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. Founded in 1947, Americans United is the only organization solely dedicated to defending the separation of church and state, acting as a shield that protects the foundational American principle of freedom of religion. It was formed “to protect everyone’s freedom to live as themselves and believe as they choose – and stop anyone from using their beliefs to harm others.”

Ms. Didelot will focus her presentation on why it is important to continue to fight for religious freedom by protecting the church-state separation. She will also dive into the biggest threat to this freedom that we face today—Christian Nationalism—and the work that Americans United is doing to fight back in the courts, the legislatures and the public square. As always, Q&A will follow.

While our programs remain FREE, we gratefully accept donations.
