KANSAS CITY BUSINESS OWNERS: WHAT IF YOU COULD REACH MORE LOCAL CUSTOMERS ON FACEBOOK WITHOUT SPENDING A DIME ON ADS?

No paid ads. No complicated technology. Just practical steps local businesses can start using right away.

If you've been waiting for cooler weather... you'll have to wait a little longer.
The next four days are expected to bring highs in the mid-to-upper 90s, with the hottest day approaching 97°. Add in the humidity, and it could feel well over 100° during the afternoon. If you have outdoor plans, try to get them done early in the morning or later in the evening, stay hydrated, and never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.

If you're planning to spend time on the water, there's something you need to know.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued Blue-Green Algae advisories for multiple Kansas lakes, including two right here in Johnson County. At the same time, the Kansas City area is expected to see dangerously hot weather over the next four days, with highs climbing into the upper 90s, meaning even more people will be looking for a place to cool off.

🚩 Lakes within about a 4-hour drive of Kansas City currently under advisory:
⚠️ Warning (Avoid Contact with the Water)
• King Lake (Lyon County)
• Melvern Outlet River Pond (Osage County)
🟡 Watch (Use Extreme Caution)
• Kill Creek Park Lake (Johnson County)
• Gardner City Lake (Johnson County)
• Lone Star Lake (Douglas County)
• Elkhorn Lake (Jackson County)
• Lake Shawnee (Shawnee County)
• Pony Creek Lake (Brown County)
• Jeffrey Energy Center Make-up Lake (Pottawatomie County)

Blue-green algae can look like green paint, pea soup, floating scum, or thick mats on the water. The toxins can make people and pets sick, and dogs are especially at risk because they often drink lake water or lick algae from their fur. If the water looks suspicious, stay out and keep your pets out, too.

🚨 𝗕𝗢𝗕𝗖𝗔𝗧 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗜𝗡 𝗝𝗢𝗛𝗡𝗦𝗢𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗬! 🐾

If you're heading outdoors this weekend, here's something to be aware of.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office Animal Control Division says it has received multiple reports of a bobcat in De Soto. Bobcats are native to Kansas and can travel through wooded areas, parks, trails, and even neighborhoods throughout Johnson County.

The Sheriff's Office has an important reminder:

Wild animals may pass through neighborhoods, but that does not mean they need food or help. The best thing to do is leave them alone and allow them to move on.

Animal Control officers also remind residents that feeding a wild animal gives it a reason to stay or return. Over time, it can lose its natural fear of people, creating a dangerous situation for residents, pets, livestock, and the wild animal itself.

If you see a bobcat or other wildlife:

🐾 Give it plenty of space.
🐾 **Do not** approach, follow, or feed it.
🐾 Keep pets on a leash or indoors if the animal is nearby.
🐾 Remember: Keeping wildlife wild is better for everyone.

👇 Have you ever spotted a bobcat, coyote, fox, deer, turkey, or other unexpected wildlife anywhere in Johnson County? Share the general area in the comments (no exact addresses). I'm curious where our neighbors have had sightings, and your comment could help keep others informed.
