14 Years Ago Today, Hurricane Sandy Devastated the Northeast
On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck the New Jersey coastline, bringing catastrophic flooding, destructive winds and widespread power outages throughout the Northeast.
The storm destroyed homes, damaged critical infrastructure and left millions without electricity. As communities struggled to recover, gasoline and diesel became essential for generators, transportation and emergency operations.
Fuel Relief Fund mobilized immediately, deploying a fuel tanker from California to provide free emergency fuel assistance throughout New York and New Jersey.
On November 3, our volunteers began distributing gasoline and diesel near a fire station in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Over the following days, FRF expanded operations to Staten Island, Long Branch, Union Beach, Sea Bright, Toms River, Rockaway Beach and Far Rockaway.
During the first three days alone, FRF provided free gasoline and diesel to more than 1,700 individuals**, helping families operate generators, maintain transportation and meet essential needs during widespread fuel shortages.
Our volunteers also supported emergency response operations associated with the American Red Cross, FEMA, the National Guard and local first responders.
For families without electricity, fuel meant heat, power and the ability to obtain necessities. For emergency responders, it meant keeping vehicles and critical relief operations running.
Fourteen years later, we remember the lives lost, the families displaced and the communities forever changed by Hurricane Sandy.
We recognize the dedication of our volunteers, donors, fuel industry supporters and emergency response partners who made this deployment possible.
Since Hurricane Sandy, Fuel Relief Fund has continued responding to disasters worldwide, providing free fuel to communities when they need it most.
Our mission remains unchanged: reducing human suffering through critical emergency fuel assistance.
When the power goes out, fuel becomes a lifeline.
