This particular verse caught our attention during our time together this past Monday night.

We see here that James is continuing to encourage and instruct believers to live differently than the norms of their day. In the 1st Century, it was common for people to swear by an oath to make people believe what they said. It got so watered down and abused that James is telling them exactly what Jesus said in Matthew 5:33-37, to simply tell the truth and carry through with what you tell others.

It's no different today. Dishonesty is rampant in our society. When we don't keep our word, we "will be condemned" (5:12). In other words, people will see and decide that you can't be trusted. We as believers should be the most trustworthy people in the world!

Be awesome like Jesus!

We're about to experience the intensity of a moto battle down here on the gulf coast with Hurricane Isaias coming in hot! With the storm and evacuations taking place, we are not going to be able to attend the Vintage Festival at Barber Motorsports Park this weekend.

Let's keep everyone at the races in our prayers, including everyone at Barber Motorsports and at the Monster Mountain race this weekend.

Be safe out there!

During our time together this past Monday night, we talked more about "works" and "faith."

James just lays it out so plainly. "A person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone" (2:24). Many believers get confused by what James says here because they have been taught that all you need to do is believe in Jesus and you will be saved. James addresses this by saying, "You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that - and shudder" (2:19).

James is not talking about working our way to heaven by the "works of the law." He is simply saying that our faith should result in a changed way of life. Faith should change the way we act, how we treat others, and what we do, just to name a few.

The truth is, an intellectual assent or belief that Jesus is the son of God is a great start, but not enough. Our faith is made complete by what we do (2:22).

As a young man reminded us Monday, Scripture should always be our measuring stick to determine the truth. Traditions or man-made beliefs/doctrines should always be tested against the word of God.

Be awesome!

We meet online every Monday night for fellowship and to dig into God's word. This past Monday, this verse stood out the most in James 1.

James makes it obvious that we must live out and put into practice what God says. But, let's not miss what James says in the middle of the verse. When we only listen to God's word and we don't live it out, we "deceive" ourselves. In other words, we are led astray.

James wrote this letter because there were false teachers who were preaching that salvation had nothing to do with good works and how you live. They were telling people that faith alone is what justifies. James is addressing this false belief. Salvation has everything to do with how you live and what you do! Check out what he later says, "Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action is dead" (2:17).

Unfortunately, there are preachers today who teach this! Those who believe this gives them an excuse to keep on sinning which totally contradicts God's word.

We as believers must live out our faith!

This past weekend I spoke on Jesus' words, "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it" (Matthew 7:13).

Many people believe Jesus is talking about believers, who enter through the narrow gate, and unbelievers, who enter the broad gate. Preachers use this all the time to condemn the "world" and make themselves feel better. I totally disagree! Jesus is addressing us as believers! He is telling us there are only a few believers who actually enter through the narrow gate, and many believers who enter through the wide gates.

Following this text, Jesus mentions two types of believers: "false prophets" - people who "bear good fruit" and "bad fruit" - people who practice and do not practice what God's word says.

In other words, false prophets, people who bear bad fruit in their lives, and people who don't practice God's word enter through the wide gates. This is the easy path that most believers take. These believers are "phony" or just straight up hypocrites! You can't even tell them a part from an unbeliever!

In contrast, those who "bear good fruit" and who put into practice God's word are the few who enter the narrow gate.

Think about the whole of Scripture: The Bible was written to people who believe. In other words, every author of every book in the Bible addresses believers. If we go a little deeper, we will see that the Bible addresses two types of believers: those who live it and those who don't.

Moses, the prophets, Jesus, Peter, and Paul all addressed these two types of believers!

Which type of believer are you?
