INCIDENT NUMBER: 26-29466

INCIDENT DATE AND TIME: October 26, 2026, at 5:07pm

REPORTING DEPUTY: Corporal Hart

INCIDENT TYPE: Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash

DECEASED: Brent Smith, 54-year-old-male

On October 26th, 2026, at 5:07 pm, 9-1-1 was notified of a motor vehicle crash on BLM road 38-6-1 near Spencer Creek Road in Murphy.

Rural Metro Fire, AMR, Oregon State Police, and Josephine County Sheriff’s Office Deputies arrived to find a pickup truck rolled off an embankment and the driver had been ejected. The driver was deceased upon arrival and was the only occupant in the vehicle.

The initial investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling towards Spencer Creek on a gravel BLM road. The vehicle left the roadway, and went down an embankment, striking several trees, before coming to rest on its side nearly 500 feet down from the roadway. Josephine County Search & Rescue's Rope Team was activated and successfully recovered Brent.

Next of kin has been notified. Our deepest condolences go out to Brent’s family and friends during this difficult time.

We would like to thank Search and Rescue Rope Rescue Team for assisting in the recovery. No further information will be released at this time.

Today, we are incredibly proud to share that K9 Luna and Melissa Madsen have successfully recertified in Human Remains Detection (HRD) through OSSA! 🐾

This accomplishment means even more to us after the journey they have faced over the past year.

A little over a year ago, Luna suffered an accident that put her future in question. The road back has taken time, patience, hard work, and determination. There have been challenges along the way, but this team kept moving forward and training one step at a time.

Today, Luna is dually certified once again! 🐾

For those outside the Search and Rescue world, certification represents far more than passing a test. It reflects countless hours of training, maintaining skills, building teamwork, and preparing for the day we may be called upon to help a family during one of the most difficult times of their lives.

Human Remains Detection is a serious and important responsibility. It requires a dedicated handler, a capable canine, and a team prepared to serve with professionalism, compassion, and respect.

Luna's recertification is a reminder that setbacks don't always define the outcome. Sometimes, the journey back is just as meaningful as the accomplishment itself.

We are incredibly proud of this dog team and look forward to the opportunity to continue serving with her. Training for the days we hope never come, knowing that when the call comes, someone may be counting on us.

Two certifications. Countless training hours. One determined little partner. Ready for the call. All volunteer! ❤️🐾

🐾 CERTIFICATION SUCCESS! 🐾

Please join us in congratulating Ranell Chisman and K9 Riddick on passing their first Oregon State Sheriff’s Association (OSSA) Wilderness certification test!

This is a significant milestone for this team! With this certification, Ranell and Riddick are now qualified to respond to missing persons incidents as a certified Wilderness Search and Rescue K9 team.

Behind every certification are countless hours of training, dedication, patience, teamwork, and perseverance. Building a reliable search team doesn't happen overnight. It takes commitment from both handler and canine to develop the skills, trust, and teamwork necessary to work in challenging conditions when someone's life may depend on it.

Today, we celebrate not only their accomplishment but also the hard work that brought them to this point. We are proud to welcome another certified K9 team ready to serve our community and respond when needed.

Congratulations, Ranell and Riddick! We look forward to seeing you continue to grow as a team and serve alongside your fellow Search and Rescue members.

Trained. Tested. Ready to respond.

RELEASE DATE: August 10, 2026
INCIDENT: Drowning / Reid Litwack Recovery
INCIDENT DATE / TIME: 08/07/2026, 11:14am
REPORTING DEPUTY: Undersheriff Snyder

On Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at 1:16pm, 911 received a message from a Garmin GPS device stating there was a rafting accident at Wildcat Rapid in the Wild and Scenic section of the Rogue River, and they were unable to locate the rafter. It was reported that 65-year-old Reid Litwack, was in an inflatable raft when it got pinned in the rapid where he was swept underwater and never surfaced. Garmin was able to assist dispatchers with communicating with the rafting party while Josephine County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, Search and Rescue (SAR) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) personnel developed a plan to rescue the rafting party.

At 5:30am the following morning, Deputies and BLM personnel made their way out to the rafters’ location, hiking for several hours to reach them. The party was able to hike themselves out of the area, and BLM made arrangements to float their belongings and equipment further down river and placed it in safe keeping to be retrieved at a later time. Between the time of the initial report and the rescue, Reid never resurfaced.

On Friday, August 7, 2026, at 11:14am, 911 received a message from another GPS device stating an unrelated rafting party had discovered a body in the river downstream from the initial incident. Deputies, SAR and BLM began a recovery mission putting a raft in at Grave Creek. BLM was able to skillfully and quickly navigate the river and reach the location after a 2-hour float where they and Deputies attempted to find the body based off information relayed in the text message. Unfortunately, markers left to assist them were no longer there and after an extensive search of the area, they were unable to locate the body.

On Saturday, August 8, 2026 at 10:46am, Deputies once again put in Grave Creek to search. At 2:01pm, Dispatchers received a satellite text from our Deputies that the body had successfully been located and recovered. SAR was notified and met Deputies at Black Bar Lodge to assist with transportation.

Investigators believe this to be Reid Litwack, however, confirmation will still need to be completed with the assistance of the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office. Next of kin have been notified.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Reid during this difficult and sad time.

We would like to recognize and thank our BLM partners along with our SAR Volunteers and Black Bar Lodge for their assistance in coordinating this recovery.

This is a reminder that when rafting or enjoying the river, please make sure you are prepared for medical emergencies and have alternate forms of communication in rural areas. Additionally, share your routes and expected return time with someone before leaving.

🐾 FUN FACT 🐾

Did you know? For the past 3 years, Josephine County SAR K9 Team has organized a multi-agency training event bringing together Search & Rescue teams from across the region — and beyond!

This annual event has drawn nearly 100 handlers, coming from most of our local counties as well as Florida, Colorado, California, and Washington.

This training helps our SAR community:
🔍 Practice perishable skills that can fade without regular use
🎯 Train across a wide variety of realistic scenarios
🤝 Build camaraderie and connections between agencies

Why does this matter? Because when the callout comes — big or small — the responders showing up are backed by real, hands-on training and a network of teams who trust and know each other.

👉 Want to support the work we do? Follow our page to stay updated, share this post to spread the word, or reach out if you'd like to learn more about what SAR K9 teams do in our community.

One of the many jobs Search and Rescue quietly steps up to do is Roadblocks and evacuation logistics for our Southern Oregon Fires. Awesome volunteers help provide resources to fire scenes to help control traffic, evacuation notification, and let our law enforcement and fire resources focus on their respective.duties. Thank you to all of the team who have been stepping up and helping this fire season.
