Ive gotten questions from people asking “Why talk about the attacks and Anti-Asian racism now? They have been happening for so long.” Well first of all, questioning the need to generate awareness for anti-Asian racism is problematic in itself. But secondly, its because hate crimes towards Asian Americans have risen by over 1900% in the last year.
~
Particularly this week. Its Lunar New Year today, a major holiday that multiple Asian countries celebrate, yet just last week, 5 hate crimes were made, back to back, against Asian Americans. You may not know about them because the media is failing to cover them.
~
Asian Americans are not silent. So many of us have been actively out here fighting anti-racism. But historically, we have always been silenced, which gives the incredibly false interpretation that all Asian Americans are passive & just do not care.
~
Read our history in America- read the history of the model minority myth, the 1854 hearing of People v Hall, 1886 hearing of Yick Wo vs Hopkins, to just name a few.
~
These are just some ways to start building safety & strength with our Asian American friends during a time where our Asian neighbors, relatives, family members, are getting hurt and killed.
~
Its so important that we get our voices out there- DO NOT BE SILENT, it only perpetuates this false stereotype about us. So PLEASE share this! And Xīnnián kuàilè / Happy Lunar New Year!!

Check out our brand new, highly interactive The Write of Your L!fe ~ Beyond Bars journal packets!

With the unprecedented changes brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, we faced new challenges in continuing The Write of Your L!fe ~ Beyond Bars. While prison closures took place all across California, we found correspondence packets were the most vital way for us to continue our programming without in-person instruction.

Carefully designed with our incarcerated students in mind, the new iteration of TWOYL~Beyond Bars includes interdisciplinary art lessons, self-care exercises, and journal prompts that promote empathy, resilience, and self-reflection. 💚

Social-emotional learning and positive behavior strategies are becoming more mainstream in school districts around the country. And for good reason. The ineffectiveness and long-lasting negative outcomes of “zero tolerance” policies are proving detrimental and completely illogical, especially for children experiencing any kind of trauma—small or large. Let’s look to a framework that prioritizes support over punishment, while also encouraging personal accountability. This support framework is called Positive Behavior Interventions Support. What exactly is PBIS?

Let’s jump in:

What is PBIS in education? Positive Behavioral Interventions Support is an approach to improve student AND educator outcomes.

"In order to show up for others, individuals must also take care of themselves. And unfortunately, the concept of community care is often pitted against self-care. I want to stress the importance of balancing both in order to become the best versions of ourselves, and be able to help the most people."

Our amazing Marketing Manager Alyssa Maio shares her thoughts on the importance of balancing self and community care in this new blog post. Read more: https://thewriteofyourlife.org/self-care-vs-community-care/

Self care vs community care. Why we need to strike a balance between the two to help more people and become better versions of ourselves.

With February being Black History Month, it's important to note the positive impact that Black poets have made, and continue to make, on American poetry. Because of this, we compiled a list of 3 powerful poems written by Black poets that you should read year-round. 💚
