Mt Baker Housing Mt. Baker Housing builds more than homes. We build opportunity, stability, and connection.

With empathy, creativity, and strong partnerships, we create affordable housing and support systems that help working families in Southeast Seattle grow and thrive. Baker Housing Association is a nonprofit organization that develops affordable housing in southeast Seattle. We revitalize and preserve existing properties through sustainable funding partnerships and efficient renovation practices, and then offer ongoing support to our residents. We believe vibrant communities begin at home and that all people, regardless of income, should have a secure, affordable place to live. Baker Housing Association is a community based 501(C) 3 non-profit organization governed by a nine member Board of Directors, each of whom resides in or near the Rainier Valley.

When Wubeyu immigrated to the United States from Ethiopia, she arrived on her own with few local connections and the hope of building a better future.

Starting over in a new country brought challenges, but it also brought opportunity. After moving into The Maddux, Wubeyu found more than an affordable place to live—she found a foundation from which to begin building the life she envisioned.

With support from Resident Services, Wubeyu connected with a free Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program and is preparing to begin classes. As she continues strengthening her English skills, she is taking meaningful steps toward a career dedicated to caring for others.

For Wubeyu, home is more than stability. It is the confidence to pursue new opportunities, the support to overcome barriers, and the chance to build a future rooted in hope.

Stories like Wubeyu's remind us that affordable housing isn't just about where people live—it's about creating the foundation from which they can thrive.

Some of the most important lessons are not learned in a classroom.

They are learned through homework help, story-sharing circles, and community game nights. They are shared through cooking classes, digital literacy workshops, resident meetings, and conversations that continue long after a program ends.

Just a few years ago, Daniel never imagined he would be searching for housing.

After being diagnosed with kidney failure, he could no longer work and suddenly faced the possibility of losing not only his income, but also his home. To avoid an eviction on his record, he made the difficult decision to leave his apartment before he was forced out. As he searched for a new place to live while undergoing weekly dialysis, the uncertainty became overwhelming.

"When I came to The Maddux Apartments, it was a form of relief for me." That relief became the foundation for something more.

Today, Daniel has found not only a stable home, but a community. He enjoys spending time with neighbors, checking in on others, and building the relationships that make a place feel like home. While he continues to navigate serious health challenges, he is looking toward the future with hope and dreams of one day owning a home of his own.

Daniel's story is a reminder that home is more than a roof overhead. It is stability during life's hardest moments, a community that welcomes you, and a place where hope can begin again.

It's where children make their first friends, parents build connections, and families gather after school. It's where confidence grows, imaginations flourish, and community begins.

Every laugh, every game, and every new friendship reminds us that when we invest in spaces like these, we're investing in far more than equipment. We're investing in childhood, belonging, and the everyday moments that strengthen a neighborhood.

Home is a place where you can feel safe, supported, and yourself.

For Farm, that feeling began when she moved into The Maddux.

Originally from Thailand, Farm has called Seattle home for many years. Before moving to The Maddux, she lived in a small apartment that never felt like the right fit. At the same time, she was navigating vision challenges that made everyday life more difficult and left her feeling isolated.

Finding a home at The Maddux gave Farm more than an apartment. It gave her a place where she could live independently, feel secure, and focus on her well-being.

Today, Farm is a familiar face at community events and gatherings, where her warm personality and welcoming spirit help bring neighbors together. What was once a search for stability has become a place of connection, belonging, and home.

Stories like Farm's remind us that affordable housing creates more than stability. It creates space for people to build relationships, participate in community, and truly feel at home.

Across our properties, community gardens have become more than places where plants grow. They have become places where neighbors share recipes, pass along gardening tips, celebrate cultural traditions, and spend time together across generations. What begins with planting seeds often grows into friendships and a deeper sense of belonging.

It's where neighbors wave hello. Where children laugh together after school. Where stories are shared, celebrations happen, and community takes shape.

Our Front Porch Campaign is inspired by that idea. Whether it's a community garden, a playground, a courtyard, or a gathering space, these places invite people to slow down, connect, and belong.

As we continue growing Neighbor to Neighbor, we're also investing in the places that help those relationships flourish. Because strong communities are built through both people and place.
