Holt International began when Harry and Bertha Holt felt moved by God to adopt eight Korean children in 1955, shortly after the Korean War. Holt's overseas work started in the spring of 1956. Over the past 50 years, Holt's Child Sponsorship program has grown to serve more than 500,000 kids in 25 different countries.

What makes Holt's sponsorship program unique?

1. Holt's ultimate goal is to unite each child with a permanent, loving family, eliminating his or her need to stay in the sponsorship program. We work toward permanent solutions, not temporary fixes.
2. Holt monitors each child and family on a case by case basis, so that the family receives the specific services most beneficial for them.
3. Holt first strives to reunite orphaned, abandoned or vulnerable children with their birth families. If a child can not be reunited with his or her birth family, we seek a loving, adoptive family within the child's birth country. If a child can't be placed in a family domestically, Holt may search for a permanent, loving family in the United States. We always seek families that will be the best match for the child. In some cases, children live temporarily or permanently with compassionate, Holt-chosen and trained foster families, which provide a more nurturing level of care than institutionalization.

Family Strengthening: Whenever possible, and if best for the child, Holt seeks to strengthen the child’s birth family. In many countries, we help struggling families’ work towards a place of self-reliance and lasting stability – efforts that ultimately prevent child abandonment. Holt also works to reunite children who have previously been separated from their birth families. Another component of Family Strengthening is providing school fees for children, so they can continue to receive an education and better their lives in the future.

Temporary Foster Care: While children wait to be reunited with their birth family, or join their adoptive family, Holt strives to place them in the care of a well-trained and loving foster family. Children receive the attentive, nurturing care they need to achieve critical developmental milestones, and form healthy emotional attachments – easing the bonding process with their forever family.

Family-Like Care: Sometimes, long-term group home placement is necessary for children who have profound medical or developmental needs. Designed for children who are unlikely to find adoptive families, group homes provide a more family-like alternative to an institution – ensuring children receive the loving care they need to reach their full potential.

Domestic Adoption: Adoption is sometimes the best solution for children who cannot grow up in their birth families. In loving adoptive families, children find the nurturing care and sense of belonging they need to thrive. Before pursuing international adoption, Holt strives to place children through in-country – or domestic – adoption, as it allows them to grow up in the country and culture of their birth.

International Adoption: For many children, international adoption is the best route to a permanent, loving family. Since our founding in 1956, Holt has placed more than 40,000 children with families through international adoption. Today, we continue to unite children with adoptive families overseas, carefully considering each child’s unique situation and needs.
