Thank you for restoring this historical statue!

They tried to break it. Now America is putting it back together.

On October 21, the limestone Iwo Jima monument near Marine Corps Base Quantico was badly damaged — the head of one sculpted Marine figure was ripped off and other parts of the statue were battered. Initial estimates put the damage in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The monument is a smaller version of the famous Arlington memorial, both sculpted by Felix de Weldon and depicting the flag-raising on Mount Suribachi, February 23, 1945.

Now the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation has launched its "Restore the Iwo Jima Memorial" campaign to fund the repairs. President and CEO Maj. Gen. James W. Lukeman, USMC (Ret.), said the monument "honors the courage and sacrifice of the Marines who fought at Iwo Jima" — and invited everyone who values that history to help.
