For about three years now, Laurie has been a familiar Friday-face on her route, delivering meals to the same clients every week.

After retiring, she was looking for a way to give back to the community. When a friend who was already delivering meals told her about the program, she knew it would be a great fit, and she's been showing up ever since.

Ask Laurie what's most rewarding, and her answer comes straight from the heart. It's the faces of the clients when she arrives at the door. "Sometimes it's the only person that they see during the day," she shared.

She makes a point of greeting each person warmly and letting them know it's nice to see them. It's a small gesture that means more than most people realize.

Thank you, Laurie, for turning a delivery into a moment of real connection, week after week.

Most volunteer drivers have a regular route. Richard has all of them.

For about a year and a half, Richard has been our fill-in driver, stepping in wherever a route needs covering. It means he's always meeting new people across the county, and he wouldn't have it any other way.

He first heard about volunteering from friends, and their example was all the encouragement he needed to sign up. Ask him what's most rewarding and his answer is simple: the people. "Most of them are really, really happy to get the food," he says.

Familiar faces or brand new ones, Richard shows up. Thank you, Richard. If flexible, meaningful volunteering sounds like a fit for you, we'd love to meet you.

There's a lot of life happening around the tables at our Rocklin Senior Cafe.

Good food is just the beginning. There's laughter, conversation, familiar faces, and the kind of friendships that make lunch the best part of the day. No one eats alone here.

If you're 60 or older, or you know someone who is, we'd love to save you a seat. Call ahead to reserve a spot, and come see what all the smiles are about.

For Steve, delivering meals runs in the family.

His dad delivered Meals on Wheels back in Illinois, and whenever Steve visited, he would ride along on the route. He saw firsthand what a friendly face at the door could mean. When Steve retired in 2020, he knew exactly how he wanted to spend some of his time.

Five years later, he's a familiar Friday face for the seniors on his route. His reason for showing up is as simple as it gets: "What could be better than giving food to people who need it?"

We couldn't agree more.

Thank you, Steve, for carrying on the family tradition right here in Placer County.

Erin is 91 years old, and she has a way of putting things that stays with you.

"I never thought I'd ever get this old," she told us with a smile, "but I'm still standing up. And I'm grateful for that."

Erin doesn't do much cooking these days, so the meals arriving at her door are a true help. The visits mean just as much. "I don't get to talk very much to people," she shared, which makes every friendly knock something to look forward to. She knows her drivers by name, though she jokes that Steve and Jay look so much alike she can hardly tell them apart.

Here's something you might not guess about Erin: she's a singer, and has been since she was 15. "Singing is a blessing for everyone because it lifts your spirit," she says.

Honestly, Erin, so do you.

Ever wondered what it's like to start volunteering with Meals on Wheels? Just ask Brian.

He's one of the newer faces behind the wheel, and after just two months of delivering meals, he has already found his groove. Recently retired, Brian was looking for a meaningful way to spend his time, and this turned out to be exactly that.

What does he love most? Helping the seniors on his route and getting to know each one of them.

The connection builds week after week, one friendly delivery at a time.

If you've been thinking about volunteering, take it from Brian: it doesn't take long to feel right at home.

This summer, the team at Baird gave their interns a memorable assignment. They spent a day with us packing nearly 600 grocery bags for Meals on Wheels clients across Placer County.

It was Baird's second volunteer event with Seniors First this year, and they intentionally built it around their summer interns, introducing a new generation to service. Each of those bags helps an older neighbor stay nourished and independent at home.

Every visit to Tony's door comes with a warm welcome and a good laugh.

Her story starts far from Placer County. Tony grew up in England, where her mom and dad ran a pub. It was there that she met an American Air Force serviceman, and love eventually brought her across the pond to the United States, where she raised five children.

At 85, Tony is quick-witted, full of personality, and clearly enjoys the company that comes with each Meals on Wheels delivery. The meals and friendly visits have become a regular part of her week, and her sense of humor makes her a favorite stop on the route.

As the days start to cool down, some very cozy help has arrived.

Warm Up America, a national nonprofit whose volunteers hand-knit and crochet blankets for people in need, donated 19 handmade lap blankets for Placer County seniors. Every one was made by hand, stitch by stitch, by someone who cared about the neighbor who would receive it.

Our volunteer Karla helped us receive the donation, and she even brought two handmade blankets of her own that day. Karla, you are a gem.

These blankets will be keeping seniors warm all season long.

Sometimes help arrives right when it matters most.

Gary has been receiving Meals on Wheels for a couple of months now, and the timing could not have been better. After a recent hospital stay, getting out of the house became harder for him, and the meals arriving at his door have been a real help while he recovers.

He wanted us to know how much he appreciates the service. Truly, Gary, the gratitude goes both ways. Being there for neighbors when they need it most is exactly why we do this.
