Update: I get things done. 🇺🇸 7/21 They are fixed.

Our schools were staffed well enough to show respect for the life of Senator Lindsey Graham by following the Governor’s order to lower the flags to half-staff. I didn’t always agree with Senator Graham on every issue, but disagreement should never be an excuse for disrespect.

Our schools should lead by example. Students learn respect by watching the adults around them. In this instance, the district dropped the ball.

The SC Order has NOT ENDED. Yet, our schools defy the Governor. And yes they are staffed.

Our Senator died and I understand his politics may not be the same as those running Horry County Schools but at least show some respect. The Governor ordered the flags at half staff until further notice. They haven’t even had a funeral. All of our school offices are staffed for at least summer programs and the district office is always staffed.

Governor Henry McMaster publicly stated:

“The Governor orders that flags atop the State Capitol, state buildings, and buildings of the political subdivisions be flown at half-staff immediately and remain at half-staff until further order in honor of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham.”

Public schools are included within the term “political subdivisions.” South Carolina law expressly recognizes school districts as political subdivisions. For example:

* S.C. Code Ann. § 1-6-10 defines “political subdivision” to include a school district, along with counties, municipalities, authorities, and other governmental entities.
* S.C. Code Ann. § 6-1-130 likewise includes school districts within the definition of a political subdivision.

Because Horry County Schools is a political subdivision of the State of South Carolina, the district falls within the Governor’s statement regarding flags on buildings of political subdivisions.

While the signed executive order distinguishes between state-owned buildings (which are ordered to lower their flags) and political subdivisions (which are requested to do so), the Governor’s public statement specifically identifies buildings of the political subdivisions as part of the statewide observance. Therefore, Horry County Schools should ensure that its flag protocol is consistent with the Governor’s directive and the state’s official recognition of this period of mourning.

As of 7/20 the State Order has NOT been lifted.

The campaign is over, but the numbers tell an interesting story.

📊 Money Raised

* Stephen Whisnant: $17,659
* Jason Morgan: $9,872
* David Warner: $2,169

🗳️ Election Results

* Jason Morgan: 1,403 votes (38.94%)
* Stephen Whisnant: 1,228 votes (34.08%)
* David Warner: 972 votes (26.98%)

💰 Cost Per Vote

* David Warner: $2.23
* Jason Morgan: $7.04
* Stephen Whisnant: $14.38

The campaign finance reports also show a very different approach to funding.

• Stephen Whisnant reported approximately $16,742 in personal contributions to his campaign.
• Jason Morgan reported approximately $8,322 in personal contributions.
• I personally contributed just $643 to my campaign.

My campaign wasn’t built on writing myself large checks. It was built by parents, neighbors, friends, volunteers, and grassroots supporters who believed in the mission.

With the least money, the least self-funding, and the lowest cost per vote, we earned 972 votes—26.98% of the total vote. (3 ran neck and neck)

Thank you to every person who prayed, volunteered, donated, shared a post, put out a sign, or cast a vote. I will always be grateful for your support. We had a movement of grassroots community members. All of our funds came from YOU!

Thank you! Nearly 1/3 of you knew the mission and understood the challenges parents face. Even with the Teachers Union coming at us…. We still made a huge difference! More parents than ever are aware of what is happening in Horry.
