CASA of the Appalachian Mountains (Court Appointed Special Advocate) recruits volunteers to represent abused/neglected children of EKY.

Our mission is to promote and advocate for children who have experienced dependency, neglect, and abuse, and to provide trained community volunteers to represent the safety and best interest of such children in the court system, with the goal of guiding them to safe, permanent, and loving homes. We serve the children of seven counties in Eastern Kentucky which include: Perry, Knott, Leslie, Letcher, Pike, Floyd & Magoffin.

🤔 So…What Exactly Does a CASA Volunteer Do?

You may have heard of CASA, but you might not know what our volunteers actually do. CASA volunteers are trained community members appointed by the court to advocate for children who have experienced abuse or neglect.

Every child deserves to have an adult in their corner. Could that be you?

We are excited to welcome Megan Combs to the Board of Directors for CASA of the Appalachian Mountains! ✨

Megan is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) who provides behavioral health services to children, adults, and families throughout Eastern Kentucky. Her experience and passion for helping others make her a wonderful addition to our CASA team!

We asked Megan a few questions to help you get to know her:

đź’™ Why did you join CASA?
“Every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and heard. Children, like adults, need to know that they have rights and their voices matter. I wanted to be part of an organization that makes that happen.”

đź’™ What is your favorite thing about being a Board Member?
“Well, I’m new but I’m sure it will be the people. It’s inspiring to serve alongside individuals who care about children and are willing to give their time and talents to make a difference.”

đź’™ What does CASA mean to you?
“CASA represents hope and the power of one caring adult to change a child’s life. Every child deserves someone in their corner, who they feel comfortable with and CASA ensures children in the court system have a voice when they need it most.”

We are so grateful to have Megan joining us as we continue working together to advocate for the best interests of children in Eastern Kentucky. đź’™

Welcome to CASA, Megan! We are so glad to have you on our team! 👏

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Jonathan Kleppinger 🌟

This month, we're proud to recognize Jonathan Kleppinger , a dedicated CASA volunteer serving Leslie County!

Jonathan is married to his wonderful wife Courtney, and together they are raising five amazing children. His heart for serving children extends beyond his own family and into our community through his work as a CASA volunteer.

Jonathan is currently advocating on his very first CASA case, and he has already made a meaningful impact. His compassion, commitment, and willingness to stand up for children have been evident from the very beginning, and we are so grateful to have him as part of the CASA of the Appalachian Mountains family.

When asked why he became a CASA volunteer, Jonathan shared:

"When my brother started volunteering years ago with CASA in Central Kentucky, I became familiar with CASA and learned about the mission and how important it can be for kids. When we moved to Eastern Kentucky and CASA of the Appalachian Mountains needed volunteers, I couldn't wait to sign up for the training. These kids are in situations that are really difficult for everyone, and it's really rewarding to be able to focus on the kids, get to know them, and be a voice for them. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to spend more time caring for kids in their community."

Thank you Jonathan, for answering the call to advocate for children who need a consistent, caring voice. Your dedication is already making a difference, and we are excited to see the impact you'll continue to have in the lives of children in Leslie County.

In 2025……
218 children from Pike County
180 children from Floyd County
164 children from Perry County
92 children from Letcher County
89 children from Johnson County
75 children from Knott County
72 children from Martin County
67 children from Leslie County
56 children from Magoffin County
41 children from Harlan County

Were removed from their homes due to Abuse, Neglect, or Dependency. That's a total of 1,054 children in our service area placed in out-of-home care last year.

That's a total of 1,054 children who needed someone's help to navigate the unfamiliar, terrifying welfare system. These children need someone's attention, someone to care. With volunteers, we would have been able to provide a Court Appointed Special Advocate for each and every one of them.

We have several children waiting right now for an advocate. If this is something that matters to you, visit our website at www.casaofappalachianmtns.org or give us a call at 606.357.2272 to find out how you can make a difference today.

For many children, the first day of school brings excitement. 🍎

For children in foster care, it can also bring anxiety with new schools, unfamiliar faces, and uncertainty. A CASA volunteer provides some consistency. Someone who listens, encourages, and advocates for what's in the child's best interest.

This school year, help us ensure no child faces those challenges alone.
