Summit just updated its CO2 pipeline plans, sidelining the MN portions of the route and putting enhanced oil recovery back on the table. This confirms what CURE has said all along: this was about producing more oil, not cutting pollution or helping rural economies.

When big corporations roll into town, they make big promises—but they cut the best deal for themselves 💼 Whether it’s pipelines or hyperscale data centers, Minnesota communities deserve all the facts before decisions are made—so we’re not the ones left paying the price ⚠️

A Midwest company is punting on including Minnesota in a large carbon storage project and organizers who opposed the effort said the instinct to read a corporation's intentions also apply

Big news: CO2 pipeline company Summit is pulling out of Minnesota, at least for now. But CURE called it: the Summit CO₂ pipeline was never about climate or helping rural economies.

“This will be a relief to the many folks in southwest Minnesota who were opposed to the project and worried about the impact that it would have on their land, water resources, and communities,” said CURE’s Maggie Schuppert

When it comes to big projects, Minnesotans are asking 👉 Who wins? Who pays? And who’s really on our side?

The original Midwest Carbon Express Pipeline proposal would have extended 150 miles into Minnesota, with an additional 30-mile arm, in a bid to capture CO2 from ethanol plants.

Unfortunately, CURE was right about the proposed Summit CO2 pipeline: It was never a "climate solution," it was proposed to bolster fossil fuel production in the form of Enhanced Oil Recovery. That’s why we look at the whole picture on big projects—whether it's carbon pipelines or now, massive data center developments — We have to ask 👉 Who wins? And who pays?

Summit Carbon Solutions, the Iowa company that had targeted North Dakota as the destination of its carbon dioxide pipeline, announced Wednesday that an updated route will instead travel to a storage site in Wyoming.

In December 2024, the MN PUC approved a 28-mile stretch of Summit's CO₂ pipeline project in MN based on an assessment that dismissed the risk that the CO₂ would be used to extract even more oil from the ground. This was despite the ample evidence CURE brought showing a high likelihood of exactly that. 🛢️ Now, Summit is saying it themselves: their pipeline would feed CO₂ to major oil basins to boost production through Enhanced Oil Recovery.

The pivot reveals a company adapting to Trump’s “drill, baby, drill” agenda and looking to cash in on recently boosted tax incentives for enhanced oil recovery.
