Equanimity Foundation, in collaboration with Virginia LULAC Director Christopher Concepcion, sponsored a program featuring a motivational speaker and a student/community art project at the Arlington Career Center. Motivational speaker Amanda Molina, a Corporate Counsel at Microsoft specializing in Artificial Intelligence who also serves as Judge Advocate General (JAG) in the Air Force, spoke of her rise to success through hard work in overcoming barriers she faced as a trailblazing first-generation Latina. Renowned Colombian artist Guache, who has exhibited his work in places such as Bogota, Paris, Berlin, and NYC, led the students in a hands-on trauma-informed art workshop featuring cultural imagery and personal expression. The art workshop was delivered in full Spanish language immersion to ensure cultural relevancy and connection with multicultural students. Margaret Chung, Principal of the Arlington Career Center, introduced this well-attended program for the Career Center's diverse student body. Award-winning photographer Lloyd Wolf beautifully captured and featured the event in his multidisciplinary Columbia Pike Documentary Project.

The event would not have been possible without the diligence and dedication of Arlington Public School staff English Language Institute Lead Amanda Trevino, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Lead Monica Lozano Caldera, and Assistant Principal Jessica Salvador, and the overwhelming support from Superintendent Dr. Francisco Durán. Key community leaders in attendance included County Board Member Takis Karantonis, Sheriff Jose Quiroz, and Arlington Democrats Chair Steve Baker, who also championed this community engagement project.

As part of our Hispanic Heritage Month spotlight, we would like to recognize the tremendous work of Claudia Romo Edelman, founder of the We Are All Human and The Hispanic Star initiative, and her commitment to promoting better jobs, education, health, inclusion, and equality for Hispanics by championing Hispanic families and gaining pledge commitments from international companies to appreciate the contributions Hispanics make everyday in the workforce.

We encourage you to watch the powerful message Claudia delivered last year during our Hispanic Heritage Month Soirée in 2020. We are incredibly thankful to Claudio for assisting organizations such as Equanimity Foundation achieve success. Please see Claudia's video through the link below.

Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) celebrates the history, culture, and significant contributions people of Hispanic/ Latin descent have made to our Nation. As an organization founded by Karen Guevara, a Salvadoran American, HHM has a special meaning for our organization. We extol HHM but also encourage everyone to learn about Hispanic culture and its peoples beyond this month and to recognize the many forms Latinos make up our American fabric. From dedicated business owners to hardworking public servants, Hispanics can be found in every segment of our society.

Originally established by President Lyndon B. Johnson in September 1968 as a week-long celebration, HHM is now observed from September 15 – October 15 to mark the national Independence Day anniversaries of many Latin American countries including El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Honduras.

Join us today and everyday to celebrate legacy of Hispanics in making America a more inclusive, sustainable, and transformative society and by reminding us that we are all Americans after all.

Equanimity Foundation is pleased to share the second article of the EQF ID (Equanimity Foundation Inclusive Discourse) Issue 2. This article, written by Mathew Chemplayil, Rod Khattabi, and Alina Marquez Reynolds, explores the challenges associated with combating human trafficking, approaches used to find justice for survivors, and makes a call-to-action for everyone to fight against modern day slavery.

Human trafficking is a $150 billion global business that affects more than 25 million people worldwide. Many victims of human trafficking regularly interact with the public, but fear and trauma often prevent them from speaking out about the abuse they face. Since many people unknowingly encounter victims, human trafficking is often described as a crime that is hidden in plain sight. The general public is largely uninformed of the warning signs of exploitation. People also tend to be unaware that some of the food and goods they purchase are made by trafficking victims trapped in cycles of abuse. The article proposes effective and inclusive approaches to combatting human trafficking based on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) frameworks and the “4P model: prevention, protection, prosecution, and partnerships.”

We are thankful to the authors for their contribution to this timely and relevant piece:
Mathew Chemplayil is a Fellow at Equanimity Foundation (EQF). He has a background in international relations and development with a vested interest in South Asian politics as well as international labor migration.

Rod Khattabi is the Chief Accountability Officer & Justice Initiative Director, Grace Farms, CT. He is responsible for all programs aligned with the mission to end modern day slavery, gender-based violence, and illegal wildlife trade, through effective policy, training, and advocacy.

Alina Marquez Reynolds, General Counsel and Justice Initiative Deputy Director, Grace Farms, CT. She serves as the General Counsel and a Deputy Director of the Justice Initiative with a focus on prevention of gender-based violence.

Today EQF highlights International Literacy Day and the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights. The COVID-19 pandemic has magnified existing inequalities, including access to education, for millions of youth worldwide. The UN aligns literacy as an integral part of education and lifelong learning premised on humanism as defined by the Sustainable Development Goal 4. EQF is committed to inclusive learning and in the context of the pandemic and International literacy day, we encourage you to find ways to uplift technology-enabled literacy learning, to reimagine literacy and to commit to leaving no one behind.

As the nation takes a day of rest to observe , Equanimity Foundation (EQF) celebrates the contributions of workers to America’s prosperity, wellbeing, and strength. Although we understand the need to highlight the importance of workers to the development of this nation, we also acknowledge the workers around the country, and the world, who continue to face unacceptable, unjust working conditions.

A Texas state law that bans abortion after as early as six weeks into the pregnancy took effect on Wednesday, September 1, 2021. The measure threatens women's reproductive rights and decision-making, potentially limiting access to reproductive health services, and jeopardizing the previous Roe v. Wade 1973 landmark ruling.

Please, see Equanimity Foundation's statement regarding how abortion bans may place women's health and reproductive rights at risk. If you are able, we encourage you to donate to the Center for Reproductive Rights, the American Civil Liberties Union ACLU, and/or Planned Parenthood to strengthen women's reproductive freedom and rights in the United States.

As the humanitarian crises unfolds in Afghanistan, Equanimity Foundation (EQF) continues to monitor the situation closely. Though the state of affairs is challenging, we recognize the need to help those who want to be helped. Vulnerable women and children should be a top priority for assistance, not an afterthought.

Our mission of supporting the global community in times of need is influenced greatly by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a staunch advocate for the rights of women and minorities in the U.S. during her tenure as America’s first female member of the Supreme Court.

EQF looks at her legacy of empowerment and inclusion, and we carry forth her mission of making life better for our global community. We encourage everyone to carry on the legacy of Justice Ginsburg by learning more about global development issues happening around the world and finding ways to get involved.
