Maybe we’ve been asking the wrong question.

For years, the conversation around addiction has centered on one question:

“Are they ready?”

Ready for treatment.

Ready for recovery.

Ready to stop.

But what if the better question is:

“What are they ready for?”

Maybe they’re not ready for abstinence.

But they are ready to be honest for the first time.

Maybe they’re ready to carry naloxone.

Maybe they’re ready to reduce their risk.

Maybe they’re ready to come back next week instead of disappearing for months.

Those aren’t failures.

They’re opportunities.

Meaningful change doesn’t always begin with abstinence. Sometimes it begins with one conversation, one safer choice, or one reason to come back.

At Hope Council, we believe progress starts by meeting people where they are. Every step toward health, safety, and recovery matters.

What do you think? Have we been asking the wrong question?
