Workers at CertainTeed’s fiberglass manufacturing facility in Chowchilla, California, have voted overwhelmingly to join Teamsters Local 431.

“We congratulate and welcome all 170 workers to Local 431,” said Justin Scott, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 431. “This victory is the result of their hard work and determination to ensure their voices are heard and respected. Their unity will be instrumental as we fight for a strong first contract that delivers improved wages and benefits for everyone.”

“The unity at this plant shined through when we heard the final vote count,” said Victor Ruiz, a 23-year CertainTeed worker and member of Local 431. “Every worker is excited to have the Teamsters on our side because we need change. For too long, management changed policies without transparency or notice and even slashed our seniority system. Now, as Teamsters, we can restore every worker’s voice at the plant and get the respect we deserve.”

“This victory exemplifies the unity and strength of every worker here,” said Jonathan Cobian, a Package Inspector at CertainTeed and member of Local 431. “This organizing campaign really brought us together, some of my coworkers I didn’t really know before this. Now, we have each other’s back and can stand united for our first contract as Teamsters.”

A statement from Teamsters California Co-chairs, Peter Finn and Victor Mineros on the signing of Assembly Bill 1776, the COMPETE Act, into law, “Today, as AB 1776 was signed into law, working Californians should remember this momentous day as a win that was carried by workers, who stood united for months in the fight to hold greedy corporations accountable despite multimillion-dollar efforts by opposition to defeat the bill. California is no longer a playground where billionaire bullies can bend century-old antitrust law in their favor, while workers paid the price. Teamsters California proudly co-sponsored this legislation from day one because we have, and always will be, leaders in delivering policies that protect working people and hold greedy corporations accountable. We want to thank Majority Leader Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry for her courage to take on complex issues that are affecting working people across California and never wavering from the fight to ensure policies in Sacramento put working people first.”

Repost Teamsters
•
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters is proud to observe September 15 – October 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month and celebrate the legacy of Hispanic Teamsters and workers in the labor movement.

From our General Executive Board to thousands of rank-and-file members, Hispanic Teamsters occupy every role in our union and play an indispensable part in winning the best contracts, organizing workers in new industries, and making our union the strongest in North America.

This month, we honor the sacrifices Hispanic Teamsters have made to make our union better for all. Through the dedicated work of the Teamsters Hispanic Caucus, we will continue to support and elevate Hispanic Teamsters and their families within our union.

70 workers at Waste Management have overwhelmingly joined Teamsters Local 150. Workers in the unit are drivers, mechanics and welders at the waste hauling company.

“Congratulations to all of the workers and welcome to Local 150,” said Dale Wentz, Teamsters Local 150 Secretary-Treasurer. “The fight to organize a union at a major company like Waste Management is a huge victory. This win belongs to all of the workers for their dedication and unity to bring this across the finish line. I want to also give a big thank you to Organizer Adam Padilla and Business Agent Matt Andrakowicz for their work on this campaign along with Local 439 and Local 70 for standing with us in this win. This is just beginning in the fight to securing a strong contract.”

“Today is a momentous day for me and my coworkers,” said Francisco Covarrubias. “I have worked at Waste Management for 7 years; we all show up around the clock to serve our communities and small businesses but have been continually disrespected by Waste Management despite workloads and routes getting harder and longer. With the Teamsters on our side I know we will finally get the respect we deserve from the company.”

“Waste Management has a track record of attempting to roll out anti-union tactics but the unified strength of Teamsters when we come together is unstoppable,” said Felix Martinez, Assistant Director of Teamsters Solid Waste and Recycling Division and Local 70 Secretary-Treasurer. “Adding another win against one of the largest waste hauling companies in the country shows the continued strength of collective worker power, setting a strong precedent in the fight for a first contract.”

Happy Labor Day to all of our members and their families.

“Now more than ever, the labor movement is at the forefront of protecting our jobs and ensuring we have a strong voice at work, in every capital and every community. The people united will not be divided, and together we will continue to lead the fight not just today, but every day, to rebuild our communities where working people win, not big tech and greedy corporations,” Peter Finn, President, Teamsters Joint Council 7

Today, we kicked off Labor Day weekend alongside California Labor Federation, SF Labor Council, dozens of our elected labor champions and fellow unions, demanding Governor Newsom signs the bills on his desk that will protect working people and ensure our state implements guardrails on AI that Big Tech is attempting to roll out.
