What is declination and why is it important when I'm using a map and compass?

Declination is the angular distance between the Geographic North Pole and the Magnetic North pole.

While the Geographic North Pole is static, the Magnetic North Pole shifts over time. The difference, as measured in degrees, is the declination that you will see on the bottom of most Maps. For the search and rescue navigator, you always need to know the current local declination, as you need to adjust for declination when you are taking a real world azimuth and putting it on your map, and vice versa.

The Detection Mindset
January 10 & 11, 2026
Bethlehem CT
Instructors: Nick Hodgen from Prospect Canine and Kate Graham from Katalyst K9-

This two-day seminar will dive deep into balancing arousal and drive, drive capping, reward mechanics, and creating the optimal mindset for scent detection tasks. This workshop will be geared towards dogs that struggle with arousal and over-excitement for detection, and handlers that would like to channel all of that enthusiasm into clear, efficient work.
This will be suitable for dogs already imprinted on target odor. Scentwork, American Schutzhund, SAR handlers are all welcome.
