Disruption. Do we like it?
Maybe we should welcome it!
Volunteering with Safe Families for Children means being open to relationships that often disrupt our schedules and routines. This is what Disruptive Generosity is all about. We see our time, talent, and treasure as a way to bless others, not just ourselves.
But look at the bigger picture. Disrupting our comfort may also disrupt the trajectory of a family in crisis. By allowing a little flexibility in our own time, we can create life-changing stability for a family facing sudden employment challenges, medical emergencies, or housing instability. So let's welcome the interruption!
Here are examples of disruptive generosity in action:
Parents who were connected with family friends had a medical emergency. Their daughter had a seizure at school, which meant they needed to get her to Children's Hospital, but they didn't have their licenses and had three other children to care for. Family friends drove them back and forth, and two other volunteer families hosted the three siblings so mom and dad could focus on their daughter's health. This is exactly what family does, and Safe Families volunteers stepped into that role, keeping this family loved and supported during a crisis.
Recently, volunteers committed to providing weekly transportation for a teen adjusting to life in a new city who would like to attend a church and youth group. By committing to these pick-ups and drop-offs, the volunteer is helping create opportunities for this teen to build meaningful relationships. It's so simple: being willing to rearrange our own lives to help someone else build a stronger, more connected future.
Recently, a parent needed a ride for a medical appointment. Staff put out a request, and within hours, five volunteers reached out to help!
