Hello Blue Streaks! My name is Dr. John Crowley-Buck, and I am the Director of the Arrupe Social Justice Scholars program here at John Carroll University. Originally from Boston, MA, I arrived at JCU just this semester after time spent at some of our fellow Jesuit institutions: Georgetown University, Loyola University Chicago, and Boston College. I hold a Ph.D. in Christian Ethics, and am interested in questions of normativity in ethical deliberation - especially as these questions impact our understandings of justice and human rights.
The Arrupe Social Justice Scholars Program, along with our colleagues in the Department of Sociology and Criminology, was delighted to receive a grant from the Donnelly School of Leadership & Social Innovation to support an advocacy campaign we are coordinating at the end of the Spring 2025 semester. This grant will help students join with the national office of Jesuit Refugee Services (JRS) in Washington, D.C. to advocate and lobby on Capitol Hill with members of Congress on behalf of migrants and refugees in the U.S. and around the world. This Donnelly Grant will support our students and give them the opportunity to gain first hand experience in social justice advocacy, civic engagement, and participatory democracy.
Our hope is that this advocacy campaign not only introduces students to the ins and outs of in-person advocacy work, but that it also empowers, encourages, and inspires JCU students to get - and stay - involved in civic life.
