🍂 Showing up and showing out! 🙌 Thank you to everyone who picked up a paintbrush, hauled away brush, or otherwise gave their time during SHED’s Fall Work Days last weekend!

In the end, more than 40 volunteers generously contributed over 160 hours of service to help complete projects at 10 homes across University City, including the 3rd Ward. From scraping, caulking, and painting to trimming brush and removing overgrowth, these volunteers took on hours of work that homeowners would otherwise have faced on their own. A huge relief.

We’re especially grateful to the teams from Bethel Lutheran Church, St. Louis, Invest STL, Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and School - University City, Wydown United Church, Grace United Methodist Church, and the Basilio Family for being part of this effort. Your hard work helped make the weekend a huge success, and we look forward to getting together again in the spring!

🎉 Exciting News! SHED recently received two generous grants focused on helping older adults in University City make critical home repairs.

A $57,000 grant from the Lutheran Foundation of St. Louis and a $15,000 grant from Marillac Mission Fund will provide a combined $72,000 (!!) toward 10 projects through our Volunteer Home Maintenance and Home Rehab Programs. Work is already underway on two houses, including the replacement of concrete front steps and landings and the repair of an ADA-accessible ramp damaged by a fallen tree.

We are incredibly grateful to both foundations — and to the private donor providing additional funding — for their generosity and for ensuring that more University City residents can receive the home assistance they need.

👏 Thank you to London B., a recent School District of University City High School graduate, for her hard work and enthusiasm this summer as an intern through SHED’s Youth Career Development Program. Working in Washington University in St. Louis’s Office of Real Estate, London became its first female summer maintenance technician, building on the hands-on experience she gained last year while helping construct the deck on SHED’s home on Crest Avenue.

Now in its second year, the internship program continues to connect local students with opportunities that develop practical skills and explore potential careers. “Having eager students such as London has been a blast,” her supervisor shared. “They have shown so much potential.”

London is now a freshman at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where she is pursuing her interest in construction management. We’re proud of her continued growth and excited to see where her experience and ambition take her next!

🍂🛠️Volunteers Wanted: SHED's Fall Work Days Are Coming!

Who's ready to roll up their sleeves and help us make a difference in U-City? If so, join us for SHED’s Fall Work Days on Saturday and Sunday, October 10-11th, from 9am to noon. Volunteers will work in teams of 3-4 to tackle minor exterior projects like cleaning gutters, light painting, and yard work—helping homeowners keep their properties safe and well-maintained. All supplies are provided, so you need only bring your energy and a willingness to serve. We hope to see you there!

👋 Welcome to the Board!

Our Board of Directors continues to grow with the addition of two dedicated community leaders. Please join us in welcoming Sharon Logan and Ed Brandt, whose lifelong commitment to University City and passion for service will help strengthen SHED's work in the years ahead.

• A University City resident for more than 50 years, Sharon is a retired registered nurse whose career included specialties in oncology, general medicine, and women's health. An active community volunteer with the The Green Center and the Garden Heights Neighborhood Association, she is passionate about stabilizing and strengthening neighborhoods and helping make University City's Third Ward an even better place to live for generations to come.

• A longtime University City resident and owner of Artisan Restoration, Ed brings decades of experience in historic home restoration, construction management, and community service. Having already volunteered with SHED by conducting home assessments, Ed is passionate about helping homeowners preserve and maintain their homes while expanding affordable homeownership opportunities in our community.

🔨We love seeing our Youth Career Development Program in action! Excited to report that last month, five School District of University City High School students gained valuable hands-on carpentry training and earned a paycheck as part of this year's summer program.

Working alongside Program Coordinator Stephen Wurst and volunteers from Habitat Saint Louis, students learned by doing—removing and deconstructing cabinets, building new cabinetry, and assisting with residential demolition. Even better, the salvaged cabinets will be refurbished and sold through Habitat Saint Louis ReStores, helping support affordable housing while keeping usable materials out of local landfills.

This summer's project built on last year's success, when students helped construct the deck for SHED's first new home on Crest Avenue. By combining real-world job experience with mentorship from skilled professionals, the YCDP continues to introduce U-City students to rewarding careers in the trades while making a lasting impact in our community.
