Virginia Union University is making history as the first Historically Black College and University to offer a doula certification program.

In partnership with Urban Baby Beginnings, the initiative is designed to address the Black maternal health crisis by equipping students with the tools to become culturally responsive birth workers.

The program provides training in prenatal, birth, and postpartum support—centering Black families and their unique needs.

By creating a pipeline of Black doulas, VUU is investing in community care, reproductive justice, and generational healing. It’s a powerful step toward closing the gap in maternal health outcomes and uplifting the power of Black birth work.

We were honored to be working alongside the CDC and Harvard professors and students again this month as we continue to perfect our doula educational program. ❤️❤️

Sonia and Ana our Harvard students have been working hard to:

💕smooth our procedures
💕build out our data collection systems
💕and intake processes

so that we can make sure our trained doulas have the best experience during their training program.

Our highlight of the week has been introducing the mayor to our guests and collaborating with the city to provide a space where families feel safe and comfortable birthing in. 💙💙
