Happy Birthday to the BSA and thank you to William D Boyce for bringing Scouting to America!

Today is National Boy Scouts Day.

"According to legend, Boyce was lost on a foggy street in London in 1909 when an unknown Scout came to his aid, guiding him back to his destination. The boy then refused Boyce's tip, explaining that he was merely doing his duty as a Boy Scout. Boyce was so impressed by the boy's actions that it inspired him to bring Scouting to America. Soon thereafter, Boyce met with Robert Baden-Powell, who was the head of the Boy Scout Association at that time. Boyce returned to America, and, four months later, founded the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910." - Wikipedia

One "good turn" brought Scouting to the United States of America.

Do you know why Camp Alexander is named that? And why the J Don cabins are thusly named? Take 10 minutes to learn a little about local, forgotten history.

The History Guy remembers the spirit of the era and the evolution of airplanes all by a film studio, Alexander Industries. It is history that deserves to be ...

Washing your hands is important. Who knew?

(That was sarcasm 😆)

Hand sanitizer alone doesn't cut it and it doesn't kill norovirus either.

An outbreak of norovirus on the Pacific Crest Trail proves that hikers’ hygiene routines need an upgrade.

September 11th was a day of heartbreak and fear. Now it is a day of remembrance. Our Scouts weren’t born back when our country was attacked by cowards, but I’d wager that every adult here remembers where they were when they heard about the attacks.

I was “in the field” in Hawaii and my intercept squad actually heard the broadcast about the planes hitting their targets. It wasn’t even sunrise in Hawaii yet, but we were all awake at that point. The exercise was put on hold. We would be pulled out hours later and brought back to our company area to a new world. One with triple strand concertina wire and bomb checks. The world changed and we had to change with it.

Friends and family deployed in defense of not just our nation, but our way of life. I’ve lost friends in these deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan and I know many of you have as well. I didn’t deploy. I came down on orders to be a drill sergeant and trained linguist Soldiers. Scouts, ask your parents about where they were on this day 22 years ago. Hear their stories.

America is not a homogenous nation. We are not the same. We have different appearances and beliefs. Different political views. This things do not make us weaker. They make us strong. When we attack each other the terrorists win. Embrace each other today and everyday. This is how we stay strong.

The video below is one that we would play for our newly arrived Soldiers at DLI. It fills my heart with pride and sorrow in equal measure and I cry each time I watch it.

Never forget.

Similar to the touching tribute in the "Hero" video from January, this one is set to the song Adiemus. It was made by Kris McKenna, a Deputy Sheriff for Some...

Did you know that one of the astronauts on the International Space Station is not only an Eagle Scout, but he is an Assistant Scoutmaster and Outdoor Ethics champion for his son’s troop? Listen to his message about Outdoor Ethics and Scouting from his vantage point!

The Pathway to the Rockies newsletter was emailed on February 15th. If you haven't checked it out, there's a lot of great information in it. In particular a change that many of us knew was coming eventually, has been announced.

Beginning September 1, 2023 anyone staying overnight on a campout MUST be a registered Scout leader in a paying position. The paying is significant because Merit Badge Counselors do not pay a fee to register so being a MB Counselor will not count for chaperones.

Details from the email are in the screenshots attached.

Yes, it's been confirmed by the man himself...Ashton Kutcher is his son's Cub Scout Den Leader! (forward to 5:50 in the video). He was a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout. I love what he says about Scouting. What a great spokesperson he would make!

“Earn this patch and become a BSA Certified Angling Instructor (CAI) with an online course (via Zoom) on Wednesday nights, starting February 15. Become certified as a fishing instructor for Packs, Troops, Crews, Camps, High Adventure, and National Jamboree staff. Improve your council's fishing events and programs! Come join us online for six weeks of fun and learning with other Scout fishing enthusiasts. Learn more and register here: https://scoutingevent.com/553-caionline23

This CAI course is for adult leaders and Scouting youth, age 15 and up, who enjoy teaching fishing skills to our youth and want to enhance their teaching and event planning skills in the fishing area. It is hosted by the Indian Waters Council but is open to participants from all BSA councils nationwide. We meet on Zoom from 7:00-9:00EST on Wednesday nights starting on February 15.

Learn the BSA approach to teaching fishing - and then teach at summer camp, day camp, weekend event, or in your own unit - Cubs, Scouts, or Venturing. This is also a great way to increase Cub recruitment in your council. Please join us if you are interested in helping build the fishing program in your unit or council!”
