On this weeks update of “Fionna’s Patriotic Adventure”, Fionna Fayette™ chose to Discover Fayette PA by visiting Jumonville Cross.

Fionna Fayette™ walked up the path to see this sight that can be seen for miles in the county. Standing high above the mountains on Dunbar's K**b, the large steel cross was dedicated in 1950 as a symbol of faith, hope, and remembrance. Children from churches across the region even helped raise money for the project by donating small amounts of money to support the construction.

The cross also overlooks Jumonville Glen National Historic Site where Fionna has visited before and learned about one of the first events leading to the French and Indian War. Fionna learned that visitors travel to the site not only to enjoy the beautiful views of our county, but also to learn about the history connected to our area.

On this weeks update of “Fionna’s Patriotic Adventure”, Fionna Fayette™ chose to Discover Fayette PA by visiting the Fayette County Historical Society/Abel Colley Tavern & Museum.

Fionna Fayette™ discovered that this tavern has been a staple to the National Road Heritage Corridor since around 1835.

During the 1800s, travelers, wagon drivers, and stagecoach passengers would stop there to rest, eat meals, and exchange horses while traveling the National Road.

One unique feature of the tavern is its two front doors. Historians believe one door led into the tavern/barroom while the other led into the family living area. Today, this tavern serves as a museum for local exhibits of history.

On this weeks update of “Fionna’s Patriotic Adventure”, Fionna Fayette™ chose to Discover Fayette PA by visiting Colonel Crawford's Cabin.

Colonel William Crawford was a soldier, surveyor, and friend of George Washington. Around 1765, he traveled to the Youghiogeny River area and decided to build a log cabin to use during the time of the French and Indian War. Fionna Fayette™ learned that while the cabin standing today is not the exact cabin Colonel Crawford built, it is a replica showing what it may have looked like during that time.

Fionna Fayette™ also discovered that after Colonel Crawford’s death, his wife Hannah continued living in the cabin on her own, even though her family was from Virginia. Hannah Crawford became known as a strong frontier woman on the Pennsylvania frontier.

On this week’s update of “Fionna’s Patriotic Adventure™,” Fionna Fayette™ decided to Discover Fayette PA by visiting Searights Tollhouse along the National Road Heritage Corridor!

Built in the 1830s, the tollhouse was used to collect fees from travelers using the National Road. Wagons, horses, and livestock traveling west would stop here to pay a small toll before continuing their journey. Tollkeepers even lived inside the building while helping maintain the busy roadway.

While learning about the tollhouse, Fionna compared it to today’s Pennsylvania Turnpike, where travelers still pay tolls to travel across Pennsylvania!

Today, Searights Tollhouse remains one of only two National Road tollhouses still standing in Pennsylvania, helping preserve an important piece of Fayette County history. Be sure to check out the Fayette County Historical Society/Abel Colley Tavern & Museum for more information of this historical site.

Be sure to look out for her next adventure in Fayette County, PA, for the Fayette County, PA 250th.
