Mon River Towns

Mon River Towns The River Town Program helps communities to recognize the river as an asset around which potential community and economic development can occur.

The communities bordering rivers throughout Pennsylvania were founded as "river towns", manufacturing centers close to river transportation and supplemented by rail. With the decline of manufacturing, these communities suffered both job loss and population decline as generations that once prospered working in industries next to the river left to find jobs. The steady decades of decline in these co

mmunities is evident as handsome and historic buildings sit vacant and manufacturing and industrial buildings next to the river are shuttered and rusting. However, there is an opportunity to offer an alternative economic engine to these small communities, one that is based on the growing outdoor recreational market and that engages communities in addressing these challenges rather than relying on public resources.
