NJ’s Fading Summer Heat☀️? Ireland’s Harvest🍁 is Also Fading
Come Make Plans to Join Union County St. Patrick’s Parade in 6 Months ☘️

As we countdown (just six months away!!) to the 2027 Union County Saint Patrick’s Day Parade ☘️ on March 13, we thought it might be fun to tell you about Ireland’s traditional harvest season – already well underway – since July, actually!!

In fact, various degrees of harvest celebrations occur from July 🌞 through September 🍂, with a final push at the start of Lúnasa (loo’-nah-sah, pronunciation can vary by region), which is both a harvest season and the name for the month of August in the Irish language. It was also the start of autumn in the pre-Christian calendar.

Festivals – like the somewhat famous Puck Fair ( https://puckfair.ie/ ) in Killorglin, south Co. Kerry – celebrated local harvest customs. We’ll let you Google the variety of potential ways the Puck Fair may have started.

As we countdown ⏱️ to our parade, it’s not too early to join our celebration in the line of march. If your charity or non-profit organization wants to march, we encourage you to reach out ([email protected]) to determine what’s involved.

For now, “may late summer find you standing in fields of plenty.”

Ireland’s Third Patron Saint

We told you about Saint Bridget on her Feb. 2 feast day, and, of course, you know about Saint Patrick’s feast day on March 17. Ireland has one other patron saint,

Saint Columcille, whose feast day is celebrated June 9. Saint Columcille lived from 521-597 AD. Born in Donegal, he was born of Irish blood and may have been a High King in Ireland had he not decided to become a priest.

He was also a poet – writing many of his poems in Latin and Gaelic -- as well as a warrior, missionary and skilled sailor. He also led the founding of a monastery on the island of Iona.

We also hope you’re making plans to join our Saint Patrick’s Day Parade on March 13, 2027. We’ll see you there.

At 4 minutes past noon, 110 years ago today, Pádraig Pearse walks onto O’Connell Street in Dublin and reads the Proclamation on behalf of the Provisional Government, proclaiming the whole of Ireland as a Sovereign Independent Republic.

Our National Flag is raised above the GPO.
