The Union City Lions Club met on Tuesday, October 13th, for its first meeting of the month. There are some changes this year, as the club met at Luz Tacos in downtown Union City. There were 11 members present along with 5 guests. The program for the evening was presented by representatives from the Union City Community Help Center. Beverly Thornburg, Theresa Hampshire, and Rick Libert shared about a new project the Help Center is undertaking. They are building five raised garden beds to grow produce to be given away during the summer. The Help Center participated in the Randolph County United Pitch Competition in September and was awarded $1,500 to get their project started. Local high school students will build the beds, and the Help Center will get advice on plant selection from Wasson Nursery. Their long-term goals include the possibility of building a greenhouse in about three years. The Help Center is still in need of a bit more funding.
